<SOLVED> Upgraded to Sarah/Serena and internet slows to nothing after a while

Postby Farnarckling » Mon Jun 19, 2017 12:20 am

I upgraded from Rosa to Sarah and now Serena. All was working fine on Rosa. Now the internet just stops working for me after several minutes connected. I cannot load pages. There is no notification of any disconnection. Wireless signal is still thee. Signal is strong I am right next to the modem. Don't know what is happening. I hope some one here can help. I am a newbie.

Welcome to the Linux Mint forums.

Likely there is a problem with your network card driver. One thing you can try (as drivers are in the kernel) is to install a newer Linux kernel. To do that open Update Manager and go into View > Linux kernels menu. Install the highest version and reboot. See if the issue persists with that. If the new kernel gives you problems you can always boot with the previous kernel by selecting it from the GRUB boot menu (if GRUB boot menu doesn't show during boot, hold down the Shift key after powering on your computer to make it appear).

You may need to connect by network cable for above, if your wifi is the problem. Or wifi if your wired network connection is the problem.

If you need further help open the terminal program from your menu and type the following command and press enter:
inxi -Fxz
Copy the output of the command and share it here. This gives us the basic overview of your hardware and drivers in use. You can select and copy text through the terminal's Edit menu.

And I also did some sort of wireless test which I saw in some one's signature here. If that helps.

I upgraded the kernel but the internet is still timing out after a while. I went from kernel 4.4.0-21 to 4.4.0-79.

I meant going to a higher release, not just applying security updates to your current kernel release as you did. Try the available 4.10 kernel (see left sidebar in View > Linux kernels menu of Update Manager).
