BrosTrend RTL8812AU WiFi adapter not active

Post by AZgl1800 »

Just bought a new BrosTrend WiFi 5g WiFi adapter, that uses the RTL8812AU chip.
Driver Manager recognized it, and installed the appropriate DKMS driver.
However, it is not showing up as an active device.

This is the Adapter, gives 5g and 2.4g WiFi support at "up to 800+ Mbps" if the USB ports are fast enough.
works with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.

See the wireless script link and post results. That driver has broken dkms but it can be fixed

Life got in the way, and the loss of Internet access too.

I need to mention that the 2.4g ViaSat connection is the internal MediaTek WiFi adapter.

The 5g WiFi BrosTrend is residing on a 3.0 USB Hub with my LogicTec Wireless mouse.

the USB 2.0 ports don't work.

After the above Terminal commands were issued, the PC was rebooted, with no effect.
The BrosTrend AC1 5g USB WiFi adapter is not showing up as activated.

Thanks for all of your previous help, appreciate it.
Would love to get this adapter working.

Also, you once posted a link to a replacement for the internal MT-7630 WiFi adapter that does support 5g,
I saved it somewhere, and managed to loose it. Do you still have that info?

Re: BrosTrend RTL8812AU WiFi adapter not active

Post by AZgl1800 »

I saw another thread about the same chipset recommending this page:
Try this:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... k.html#ID5
(item 5)

I followed that, and it works, BUT, I noted that it is building the drivers inside /home and that means when a new kernel is installed, it won't work anymore.

that is not acceptable long term.... so, I need help with the dkms method to get it fixed.

While I was typing up this response, the BrosTrend 5g connection turned OFF, and won't stay turned back ON long enough to connect again.... so the "install" is not any good.

I had to revert back to the onboard MediaTek WiFi 2.4g to post this.

a comment: The Activity light on the BrosTrend is flashing all the time.
When I mouse over the available WiFi connections, all of the other signals are highlighted,
but when I mouse over the 5g BrosTrend connection, it does NOT highlight.
my internet connection tonight is only 0.100Mbps, so no pictures to upload.

Can you change the wifi router settings? I would put it on channel 1 and change encryption to WPA2 only without TKIP. What happens when you

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe 8812au

Channel "1" is the 2.4g band, I am trying to get the 5g BrosTrend to work.

My Satellite connection barfed on me, so I am now on my Verizon MiFi JetPack
and when that came up, the BrosTrend modem detected it on 2.4g and the mouse highlighted it, so I selected that and the PC is now working on 2.4g BrosTrend adapter.
now, after I typed the above, I noticed that the laptop has switched over to the MediaTek 2.4g adapter, and locked onto the default ViaSat WiFi signal again...

I found this WiFi NIC last night, and ordered it.

I hope that it works with my ASUS TP500L which does have the Intel cpu and video hardware.

it would be nice if it does work, and the OEM NIC in the laptop only has 2.4g and no Bluetooth.

That should work after installing. I had one in an old Dell laptop

Any thoughts on why the BrosTrend is coming up, showing the WiFi signals available and IF, it will connect to one, it drops off after about 60 seconds?

and now, at the present time, the BrosTrend is only showing that 2.4g is available.
When I earlier had to turn on my Verizon MiFi JetPack and connected to the 2.4g signal,
the BrosTrend has not once revealed that it can see a 5g signal from the ViaSat WiFi

i just now, clicked the BrosTrend On/Off to turn it back on,
it stays on with the "connecting" message, and then promptly turns OFF again,
as can be seen in the picture above. it will NOT stay turned ON.

The reviews on amazon.com for the BrosTrend indicates it might have issues even in Windows with disconnects

I thought I had read the reviews, wondering about sending it back, or if it is even worth the effort.

at this point, it is useless.

Well, it isn't 5g, but I have solved my connection problems with this laptop.

the MediaTek WiFi card is junk, it will NOT stay connected, it keeps dropping out.

My laptop's internal WiFi adapter card is a piece of useless junk

I just received this little repeater/LAN to Modem/ WiFi trick piece of gear.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JB ... 2__o00_s00

it is the Cat's Meow...

My original intent is to use it with my Verizon Mini Cell extender via the Internet at hotels or other places where Verizon does not have coverage.... like when I was camping in Colorado, and the RV park had WiFi....

Hook the laptop via the Cat5 port to the Dodo extender/repeater and set it up Manually for the password to the Internet signal. The included Manual is terrific!!!

Then you can use it as the laptop's internet access point ( which I am doing right now ),
or plug in my Verizon Mini Cell repeater.... voila!!! I have service to Verizon's network.

But, what I discovered by using it today, is that it has not once, dropped out...
Whereas my laptop's WiFi connection continually drops off, even though I have Power Control turned OFF.

This thing is cheap at $18.99

it has been a super pleasure today, to use the internet all day long, and not one single loss of service.

Love dealing with Amazon.

Easy, 1,2,3 and it is going back for a Full Refund.
