(Solved) Wifi not working - Broadcom Limited: BCM43142

Post by BuffaloeSoldier » Wed Mar 13, 2019 6:29 pm

I installed Linux mint on my laptop today and have been unable to figure out what is causing my wireless not to work.

1. On the "Driver Manager" I see as follows...

Broadcom Limited: BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
This device is using an alternative driver.
(selected) bcmwl-kernal-source
Version 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4
Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source
(not selected) Do not use the device

^ Originally it had selected "Do not use the device" but seeing this I had switched it over in an attempt to make the wireless functional. (this did not work)

2. Under "Network Settings" I do not see any option for wireless.
3. If it matters, I have gone into the "Update Manager" as well to ensure that my system has the latest updates installed (I have been troubleshooting all of this via an ethernet connection)

This is one of the websites that I found which is supposed to be fairly straight forward...
http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-b ... inux-mint/
...however, when I typed in these commands the system returned a message saying it was "unable to locate..."

I also stumbled upon this site...
https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/796
... After following the steps indicated I was able to install the indicated file which still would not result in my wireless working again. This persisted through a restart. I will mention though that the links provided on this website to check support were nonfunction for me.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

Well you need to have bcmwl-kernel-source installed with secure boot disabled in BIOS, check secure boot setting in terminal with mokutil --sb-state

Jeremy, I have done as you said to verify secure boot and it is indeed enabled. How do I verify that the bcmwl-kernal-source is correctly installed on my machine?

Thanks!

Check

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net
See if it shows wl after kernel module
Secure Boot will keep the wl module from being used

It works!

I ran the sequence through the terminal and was shown a "wl" after the kernel module. I went into the bios and disabled secure boot. The wireless is now working. On a side note, should I be worried about any security concerns now that I have secure boot disabled?

Thanks for the assistance Jeremy!

I don't have Secure Boot enabled on any of my computers, some don't support UEFI which Secure Boot is part of

Do a boot BIOS lock which secures your computer (Administrator Lock and Boot Lock). These are set to clear at first. Then assign new passwords so your anxiety to protect your system will easy a bit!

I love that sound of beep when you press with numlock!

Hope it helps
