I have just bought one of these from Amazon on the premise that it's:-
the same brand as a similar 802.11a/b/g high gain adapter that I've had for years (which it's to replace),
802.11a/b/g/n/ae dual band (2.4 & 5 GHz),
'compatible' with Linux and Windows 7.

Toshiba Portege laptop running Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" - Cinnamon (64-bit) under kernel 4.15.0-70-generic. "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

BUT I'm struggling to install a driver that works.
Ist Issue:-

Code: Select all

$ lsusb

Code: Select all

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 2357:0115
all the other devices are identified.
Sources suggest variously that ID 2357:0115 equates to RTL8812au, or RTL8822bu chipsets (different drivers) - as a completely different ID equates to the 8812, I deduce 2357:0115 is in fact RTL8822bu.

2nd Issue:-
I carefully followed the instructions above to compile the 8822 driver - which says it's successfully installed the driver:

Code: Select all

8822bu.ko:
Running module version sanity check.
 - Original module
   - No original module exists within this kernel
 - Installation
   - Installing to /lib/modules/4.15.0-65-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/

depmod.........

DKMS: install completed.
BUT

Code: Select all

uname -r
4.15.0-70-generic
and

Code: Select all

lsmod
not surprisingly shows no trace of 8822bu.ko nor does /lib/modules/4.15.0-70-generic/modules.dep, but it is shown in /lib/modules/4.15.0-65-generic/modules.dep

SO
I'm wary of fiddling with the modules.dep file, lest I break my working installation.
Am I attempting to install the correct driver?
Why does DKMS use the previous kernel version?
Assuming that I am attempting to install the correct driver, what's the best way to fix my problem?

I'd send it back, but suspect that I'm likely to have similar problems with any alternative.

Hello Guy71,

with the command

Code: Select all

dkms status
you can check the dkms install in the differnet kernels. Which driver installation guide/website have you chosen and which commands have you used?
