Ralink PCIe Card Drops Connection

Hello all,

I have a Ralink RT5392 PCIe Card that I installed in a friend's HP computer. The card worked on another computer that I disassembled for parts. It had 18.3 Linux Mint on it and the wireless card worked without even having to manually install a driver.

I installed 19.3 Mint Xfce on his computer (converting him from Windows 7 to Mint). In Mint, the card seems to work and I can select his router to sign in. The connection seems to work, but seconds later, disconnects. When I try to reconnect, I can't find the router because the card doesn't seem to exist anymore.

The Ralink came with a mini CD that has a Windows driver and a Linux driver.

3> In os/linux/config.mk 
	define the GCC and LD of the target machine
	define the compiler flags CFLAGS
	modify to meet your need.
	** Build for being controlled by NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant wext functions

If you want for rt2860 driver to auto-load at boot time:
A) choose ra0 for first RT2860 WLAN card, ra1 for second RT2860 WLAN card, etc.
   
B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,      
   edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
       alias ra0 rt2860sta
   
C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0  
   DEVICE='ra0'
   ONBOOT='yes'     


NOTE:
   if you use dhcp, add this line too .
    BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

*D) To ease the Default Gateway setting, 
    add the line

Dongle/Clone Features:

A) Dongle mode: 
   	Provides a 1-to-N MAC address mapping mechanism such that more than one PC behind the STA 
   	can transparently connect to the AP.

B) Clone mode:
	Provides a 1-to-1 MAC address mapping mechanism. 
	STA can use own MAC as SA MAC or 
			use user desired MAC as SA MAC or
		    use source MAC of first packet coming from wired device as SA MAC.
	NOTE: In this mode, only the PC who own the specified MAC can connect to the AP.

I think those chipsets don't like wifi power management enabled

If you haven't done so yet, I'd try a kernel upgrade:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.3 series. Then reboot.

Hi Pjotr,

Thanks for the advice. One question: If the PCIe wireless card ran without issue when I had 18.3 (kernel version 4.10), shouldn't kernel version 4.15 be ok?

In theory, yes.... :)

But there are such things as regressions. It never hurts to try a newer kernel (with hopefully a newer driver version for that card). And if it doesn't help: it's easy to reverse....

See if they can change the channel the router is on to channel 6 or 11 as there are 5 AP's all on the same channel

Last night, I changed the channel of the router to 6. Still the same issue. I haven't tried Pjotr's suggestion to go to series 5.3 kernel.

Could there be a power saving setting in BIOS for the PCIe?

I'm uncertain if my problem is related, but after the last kernel update (5.30-40) my Ralink RT5390 became unstable. Connecting to an access point was slow at times and, when connected, websites stopped loading at random.

After ruling out other possible causes, reverting back to kernel version 5.30-28 proved to solve all the problems described above.
