There are some tweaks I have used in sysctl.conf to optimize IPv4 TCP parameters. Check it out but be sure to make a backup copy of this file first. Out of the box, TCP parameters are set to values that accomodate "the average connection" including possible dial-up.

Also look at the Administration > Network > (your connection) > DNS tab. I run mine with no entries in either box.

Are you using Firefox in Windows? There are some Firefox performance tweaks as well.

Which revision of the DWA-140 do you have? If you don't know, please run this in terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

lsusb

thanks for the reply guys, as for trapperjohn i have only been using mint for just over a week now but i think i'm learning pretty fast ( i hope). i will have a read about the sysctl.conf before i change anything lol.

web browser is fire in windows, but i use alt.binz for my newsgroup on win 7. wich pulls around 70 / 72 mbps avegrage.

Ok, it's a Ralink RT3072. Should work well with Linux today.

You can try installing a newer driver version:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... 3-2.tar.xz

Please download and extract that file, then please go to the folder where you extracted it (compat-drivers-3.8.3-2 folder) and right-click inside it > Open in Terminal.
In that terminal please run:

Code: Select all

./scripts/driver-select rt2x00
make
sudo make install
