Wifi Problem Compaq cq58-278sa

Post by macfflei » Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:38 am

Hi all, I recently bought a Compaq cq58-278sa laptop, took the w8 HD out and put a new HD in with linux mint 14 64b mate installed. Everything worked like a dream for about 1 month. Then the wifi keep dropping out, it was very intermittent at the beginning then it happend all the time. It droped out after 5min, I had to reboot in order to reconnect! I became very annoyed. I tried to manually install the reltek rt5390 driver, no joy. I then suspected the wifi card, but I tried the windows 8 HD and it worked fine. I then switched routers from a BT home hub 1.5 to a netgear router and the problem has now gone away. Could this be a channel issue on the BT hub router why is it working with windows 8 and not with linux mint?

It very well could be a router issue. I'm curious....are you now using the RT2800 driver or the RT5390? You can find out via

Code: Select all

lsmod

From the below it looks like rt2800 - As I said when using the netgear rourter I get no issues.
I am currently at my mothers who also has a br hub v1.5. Same issue here it keeps droping out! Could it be an issue with the BT HUB or does the below tell you a different story?

I've seen several complaints about your particular wireless device, but changing to a Netgear router is interesting that your card works fine with it. I'm wondering if it's possible to change channels on the BT router and achieve the same result or if something unique to the BT is just finicky with the driver. I don't know how to solve that but it definitely points to the BT router. Many users rolled the RT5390sta in order to get rid of connection problems but you had mentioned that wasn't working for you so I'm not sure what to do from there.

Do you have the ability to change settings on the router at your mom's to see if a different channel will work better?

May be the whole router things is a pure coincidence and that I need to update the driver! May be I didn't update the driver properly before.
How do I go about installing the rt5390 driver properly? I have changed the channel to 1 on the router, so far so good!
Below is how I attempted to install the driver. I had no errors, however how come it is still showing the rt2800 in the lsmod?
Thanks

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential dkms patch fakeroot unzip

wget http://ubuntuone.com/4OstD6VI9dLGPAc9YwHCYR

unzip 4OstD6VI9dLGPAc9YwHCYR

cd angepasster-2011_0406_RT5390_RT5392_Linux_STA_V2.5.0.3_DPO/

sudo make

sudo make install

sudo modprobe -v rt5390sta

sudo depmod -a

sudo update-initramfs -u

Further to the above it has now disconnected again after changing the channel. May be I haven't been on the netgear long enough to give it good test, but it was very promising.
Is there any any settings with in the BT router that I could tweak or could be causing the problem? I hate intermittent faults!
Thanks
