Mint 16, Broadcom, No Wireless After Install! [SOLVED]

Okay, so I'm a total noob, but bear with me. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a broadcom card (if I'm reading it right, it's maybe the Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card?). Prior to the install of Petra, on the "trial" screen, I was able to go into the driver manager and turn on the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source. Other info attached to it: bcmwl-kernel-source, Version 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu1. The other driver is listed as "unknown."

So, back on track: I was able to switch on the broadcom driver, got connected to the internet, and continued with the install. After booting up again, I tried to do the same thing in the driver manager, but every time I hit "Apply Changes," it just reverts back to the "Do Not Use This Device" default for both of them and states "This Device Is Not Working" under each one (though the latter may have been the case before install as well, I don't remember). The computer won't connect to ethernet, either. I ran some stuff through the terminal that I thought might be helpful, though I have no idea what to do with any of it:

I am in the same shoe here with Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't uninstall the Broadcom wireless driver either. I guess that only way to get out of this situation is to reinstall the OS.

I'm having the same problem, after installing Mint 16 Xcfe on an old HP Compaq that has a Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g WLAN. From the Driver Manager, when I click the radio button for the "bcmwl-kernel-source" driver and try to apply the changes, the Driver Manager window almost imediately goes back to the same screen, with "Do not use this device" selected instead of "bcmwl-kernel-source".

Beneath the description of the hardware it says "This device is not working." However, I know that the hardware wireless adapter is working, because it worked yesterday on Windows XP before I installed Mint.

I do have access to a broadband cable.

Output of mintwifi:

This problem apparently has nothing to do with Linux Mint 16. I have since tried installing Xubuntu 13.10 on the same laptop, and I've experienced the same problems with Xubuntu that I described on Linux Mint, including a wired ethernet problem that I didn't notice with Mint.

I doubt that there is a simple solution for this driver conflict on any Linux distro. I've been trying a lot of hacky terminal-based solutions from the Ubuntu forums, but nothing has worked yet.

This problem apparently has nothing to do with Linux Mint 16.
All linux distributions share the same kernel (the Linux kernel). The kernel is the component that handles the hardware (and contains most drivers), if you have issues with one linux distro, you will have same issues with everyone.

bcmwl-kernel-source is the package that contains the proprietary drivers, but it may or may not work depending on how much it likes the kernel version you are using.

There is also an open-source driver called b43 already in the kernel that can be enabled with some terminal magic.

Try this http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-b ... inux-mint/

If it works, write it down in case you need to do it again in the future.

I'll start with the "easy" one. Another guy had issues with your ethernet controller, and solved with a manual kernel upgrade to the latest. from here http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... inux-mint/
Since you are offline in Mint, the commands about downloading won't work.
But if you look at them closely, they contain the download link.
It's the bold text in this example. Copy the links you see in the address bar of your browser and you will be able to download that file from Windows. Then you can move them to the Mint PC, place the three files in the Download folder in your Home.

Then you can proceed as described in the article.

That solution worked perfectly and seamlessly. Thank you!

I have a dell 1545 as well and installing the wireless driver is very easy. You'll need an internet connection somehow (an ethernet cable plugged into a router for example). Click on the menu and search for drivers and open driver manager. Once that opens it's easy to install the driver, just select the driver and click apply changes.

I just went ahead and ordered the intel wireless card (like $17 on ebay). Super easy to switch out, and my machine picked up the internet right away when I booted up again. Much better option than continuing my battle against the broadcom card. Yay!

Hi!

Did what is told under the link you suggested.
Now I can see wireless network (which I did not before), but it cannot be switched on.
Have to say, that I tried to install windows driver before via Windows Wireless Drivers, where I stuck after committed inf-file.

I am new to Linux, switching from Windows XP to Linux Mint at the moment, so every help is appreciated.

Regards
Manfred

Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
==> PCI ID = 14e4:4315 (rev 01)
This device needs firmware and not the STA driver, aka bcmwl-kernel-source. I suggest:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot and see if the ethernet is now working and then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Hi!
Thank you very much, it works now!
In my case it is an Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) PCI ID = 14e4:4311
But it works anyway :D

It's always dangerous to mix and match solutions in Broadcom wireless, but in your case, the solution is correct.

For the benefit of the searchers, I highly recommend that you be sure that the solution you try is exactly for your pci.id, in this case 14e4:4311 or 14e4:4315.

I have a Compaq V2000z which comes with a BCM4318 rev 2 and had a similar problem last night when I decided to jump from Win XP to Mint. In my case, wireless didn't work on install (Petra Cinnamon) and the Driver Manager showed at the top:
Broadcom Corporation: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
This device is not working.
bcmwl-kernel-source
Version 6.30.223.141+bdcom-0buntu1...
And had the "Do not use this device" flagged.

I had found a comment in a different discussion which had these steps, and fortunately for me wired connection worked:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutter
Which is supposed to uninstall the Broadcom driver and use an older driver. Oddly, after the first command it told me that the bcmwl-kernel-source wasn't installed so couldn't be removed. The next steps were to check the blacklist:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'bcm'
Which returned 'blacklist bcm43xx' IIRC

Code: Select all

cd /etc/modprobe.d/
sudo gedit blacklist.conf
To get to the blacklist, then comment out the line with 'blacklist bcm43xx' with a #, save, and then reboot. After restarting the wireless worked for me. Blacklist had the comment "replaced by b43 and ssb"

I am new to linux, so not entirely sure this is the ideal way to get it working. For some reason the Driver Manager still shows the original message from the top, despite the fact that wireless seems to be working correctly for me. I am not entirely sure how to correct this, unless I am supposed to blacklist the bcmwl-kernel-source or b43.

The blacklist change did nothing for you, there is no longer any module (aka driver) named bcm43xx. I'm sure what did it was installing the required firmware.

You needn't correct it. You only need ignore it and enjoy your new Mint experience. Have fun!

Interesting. It didn't seem to work until I did the blacklist and restarted. Did I miss a step of starting a module or something?

The driver won't see and use the shiny new firmware until you reload the module:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r b43 && sudo modprobe b43
...or, alternatively, until you reboot.
