Linux Mint(17.1) only my wifi network is not visible.

Post by blizzard »

Hi All,
I have Dell Inspiron N5010 and Asus RT-N10E router( http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN10E/specifications/ ). I face a very weird problem, my wifi network is not at all visible in Linux Mint, but it works fine in Windows-7(Dual boot Mode) and in my mobile.

I tried changing different configurations in router such as channel, security(WPA/WPA2), Access Point mode etc., Resetted the router, tried wicd but no success.
Please find the output of wireless-info script:

I see five wireless networks in the iwlist scan output, is your wireless one of them:
- hemelatha
- Jertel
- belkin.3b6c
- Ananya
- MGMNT

--rfkill switch
  • Second, the module dell-laptop sometimes does not correctly translate key presses to useful activity. Let's unload it and see if we can get the wireless to come to life. Please do:
    sudo rmmod -f dell-laptop
    sudo rfkill unblock all
    iwconfig

Is your wireless working now? If so, we can permanently block the module with:

    sudo su
    echo "blacklist dell-laptop" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    exit
--some info there and also how to check devices network status..
I'd probably start with that method unload the module and restart, and I would check if you may need to blacklist the module itself, search for that device issues with Mint or Ubuntu or Linux (general) could be of help..

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, I guess i had better read those logs more carefully, I see rfkill in use (although not often needed )in your log
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

your log info..
  • Device: wlan0 ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Type: 802.11 WiFi
    Driver: iwlwifi
    State: disconnected
    Default: no
    HW Address: <MAC 'wlan0'
--also your rout table looks odd..

I would probably start looking at my wifi and IP addressing functions to see that I had the correct configuration setup for particular devices (wlan0) and that the network controls were selected correctly
--and I am not sure (but don't have much time to check) if you need the broadcom driver STA for that particular wifi device..

Apart from what has already been said: set the security of your router to WPA2 with "AES only". That helps sometimes. And make sure the SSID is being broadcast (don't hide it; hiding is even harmful).

Some more tips about configuring your wireless network correctly:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... tywireless

Also worthwhile doing: make sure that your router is transmitting on a channel that's relatively unused in your surroundings. Select only channel 1, 6 or 11, because only those have no overlap.

@albertP: Nope, my SSID is different.

@DrHu: I tried the 3(rmmod,rfkill,iwconfig) commands, but no use, my wifi network still not visible.

@pjotr: Exisiting wifi configration is "WPA2" and "AES" only.
As in the link, I was not hiding my SSID, I have latest firmware installed and I have tried all channels from 1-13, but nothing works :(

@all: http://wisp.pl/al/demo/RT-N10E/wlbasic.htm checkout various configuration details about the router.

This could be a regulatory issue so let's set the country code, if you are in India the command is

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set IN
and then

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/default/crda
and change the final line to
REGDOMAIN=IN
Save, exit program, and reboot. You might have issues with your wifi card if your wifi router is 11n only, but we can do this

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwl2.conf
This command does not disable wireless N, it actually improves the performance of the card on wireless N networks

@JeremyB : I set the region code and disabled 11n functionality also, but still it's not working. This is my iwlwifi.conf file contents:

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d $ cat iwlwifi.conf
# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# iwlwifi will dyamically load either iwldvm or iwlmvm depending on the
# microcode file installed on the system. When removing iwlwifi, first
# remove the iwl?vm module and then iwlwifi.
remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8

It might be something simple: maybe your network is hiding under "More..." in the network list?

@Pjotr: Nope, I'm also checking via terminal too.

Code: Select all

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan | grep -i essid
My SSID is not displayed.

I am not sure if this will help or not, but it is worth a shot. Using the latest backports, enter one line at a time in terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.19-rc1/backports-3.19-rc1-1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf backports-3.19-rc1-1.tar.gz
cd backports-3.19-rc1-1
make defconfig-iwlwifi
make
sudo make install
reboot and see if it helps
If it doesn't help, it can be removed with

Code: Select all

cd backports-3.19-rc1-1
sudo make uninstall

Or upgrade the firmware of your router to the latest version. It's beginning to look like a router problem, not a Mint problem....

@JeremyB: Tried it, not working.

@Pjotr: I don't think it's a router problem, since I was able to access the same wifi network in my Windows-7 and my mobile too.

Okay, guys thanks for the help, I'll use ethernet cable for connecting to router, If I find any possible solution, I 'll update.

Did you find a solution? I'm experiencing a similar problem, network showing up on my phone, but not on the computer. But for me it's only periodical. Most days I have no problems with my wireless network.

Which router do you have? Mine is a Zyxel VMG8924-B10A.

Does

Code: Select all

iw reg get; cat /etc/default/crda | grep REGDOMAIN
show the correct country code. Do you know what channel the wifi is on when the linux computer can't find it?

My wife is experiencing a similar problem with Mint 17.3 Rosa on her Dell Inspiron 5520 - after many months of rock-solid connections, from yesterday the laptop Wifi can detect every wifi router in the neighbourhood except the one in the house - a D-LINK DIR-600 - less than a metre from the machine. :( But the same router is visible to my Android phone, and Ethernet connection to her machine and mine from the same router still works.

I've tried resetting the router (including a factory reset and reconfigure) and confirmed the router has the latest firmware. I've confirmed through Device Manager that the Broadcomm wifi drivers for the Dell are the latest versions, and have set the REGDOMAIN to "NZ" as per JeremyB below. Still no joy.
The last resort is either updating the kernel from 3.13 to 3.19 through Update Manager (the machine started with 17.1 and has been upgraded through the Update Manager), or doing a full re-install from USB. Not sure if that'll solve the problem - is this a potential option?

The only thing that's been different over the last couple of days is updating the dual-boot of Windows 7 to Windows 10, but I struggle to think how a Windows upgrade can nobble the wifi on a Linus OS when Windows doesn't even know the Linux partitions(s) exist. Unless Win10 has managed to do a wifi firmware update?
(My only "consolation" is that Win10's wifi connectivity on the Dell is so unreliable we're already considering reverting to Win7 on the dual-boot!)

Try if it helps when you change the channel to 1, 6 or 11. Reason: in some countries, among which the USA, channels above 11 are forbidden. This might lead driver developers to disregard the potential presence of those higher channels.

Out of those three, select the channel that's optimal for you, i.e. the one that's least in use by other routers in your vicinity. You can use the free Android app Wifi Analyzer for that (if you have an Android smartphone).

I changes the channel selection on the router from "Auto" to "Channel 11", and I also updated the routher WPA2 encryption from "TKIP/AES" to "AES" only as per your wireless security tips.

Wireless connectivity from our router to my wife's laptop is now restored, and she's happy!
Still don't understand why if failed in the first place after it working for well over twelve months, but it's working now so all is good. Thanks for the assistance!

thanks guys, changing channel worked for me , whats really weird is id just tried pretty much every flavor of mint yesterday and didnt encounter this problem at all , it might explain some other oddities in my testing yesterday on an older computer and with windows also, for reference i was on channel 13 before, worked immediately when changed to 11, was showing everyone elses wifi and other devices picked up my router no probs.
good luck to anyone else googling this ☺
