Looks like we have a winner

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
Reboot, and take the laptop into another room

Thank You JeremyB,

This post was very helpful for me to resolve the network strength issue on my Ubuntu 14.04.

By any chance, can you help me with the bluetooth as well?

I am very new to Linux family and have little or no knowledge how to get stuffs done.

Regards,
Avirup.

My wifi worked for like 15 mins before it got disconnected. Every time i restart the computer, it works for 15 mins. I tried some solutions i found online, but my wifi stop working completely.

Blindly follow this simple walkthrough ! I know that feeling, when your wifi fails and you can't work without it!!
After a week of trials and multiple re-installations, this was what solved the problem.

Thanks so much for a perfect working solution. I have the exact same RTL adapter as you and this seems to have worked a treat for the wifi dropping out all the time.

I am a long time Ubuntu user going on 10 years now, only last night I installed Mint for the first on a Proline laptop that my Dad had bought a few months ago but was absolute rubbish and slow as hell. It is running so damn smooth it's like a new machine and not something anymore that was about to be tossed. It's only a Celeron but man with Mint on it it runs like a little beast.

I am UBER impressed with Mint and also the excellent support in these forums. Every little niggly problem I encountered last night I fixed within minutes due to a Mint community that really seems to want to help others. It's very refreshing coming from the pure Ubuntu community who can be often very difficult and only offer half solutions to anything. Going to reload my plex media player server now this morning and replace Ubuntu with Mint as it really runs rather slow for a Core-i7 chip.

Not even 24 hours and I absolutely love Mint.

WOW! I went ahead and created a forum account to personally confirm that akhilraj95's post worked for me. I'll go ahead and copy/paste the directions I followed from the link he provided (for convenience):
===============================================================================
https://connectwww.com/how-to-solve-rea ... untu/4625/

iwconfig ---> note your wlp number (e.g. wlp13s0)
download driver: "rtlwifi_new-rock.new_btcoex" ---> upzip to the desktop
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new ... new_btcoex

cd Desktop
cd rtlwifi_new-rock.new_btcoex
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -rv rtl8723be
sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=2
sudo ip link set wlp13s0 up
sudo iw dev wlp13s0 scan
echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8723be.conf

**NOTE** After your OS (Kernel) update, you need to apply these settings again to get strong signal.

**NOTE** If you getting any error in the installation process after your OS UPGRADE (that is from 16.04 to 16.10), please follow the below steps.
-After finding the wlp number. Download the below driver.
-Download driver: "rtlwifi_new-master"
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new
-Unzip the file to the desktop
-(terminal)
cd Desktop
cd rtlwifi_new-master
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -rv rtl8723be
sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=2
sudo ip link set wlp13s0 up
sudo iw dev wlp13s0 scan
echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8723be.conf
===============================================================================
I did everything in bold (don't type the underlined in the terminal! that's just a link to where you download the driver). The stuff after the notes, which I don't need to do YET (::knocks on wood::), is supposed to be some kind of follow-up fix if a kernel(?) update breaks the fix in bold.

Anyways, I just want wanted to spread the word out there that this fix worked for me. This was for a HP Notebook 15-ay065nr that has the infamous RTL8723BE wireless card. This initially had Windows 10 on it, and I felt tempted to go back after it (after spending the whole day yesterday pulling my hair out on trying to find a wireless fix). I'm glad I stuck it out, and now I'm really lovin' Linux Mint! :D

Solved RTL8723be weak signal on HP laptops

Post by JeremyB »

If you are using LM18/Ubuntu 16.04 and newer, you do not need to install anything.
Just do a check to see what ant_sel needs to be set to

Code: Select all

iwlist scan | egrep -i 'ssid|quality'
That will show the Access Points and the reception, then we will unload the module and try the first parameter option

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=1

Code: Select all

iwlist scan | egrep -i 'ssid|quality'
The results from the scan may be the same as original or better but we will check the last option for ant_sel

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=2

Code: Select all

iwlist scan | egrep -i 'ssid|quality'
If ant_sel=1 was the best then do

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723-ant-sel.conf
If ant_sel=2 was the better option

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723-ant-sel.conf

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=1 fwlps=N
If you still can't see any wireless networks then

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=2 fwlps=N
I suspect that your wireless card has only one antenna on a card with two antenna connectors
This answer worked on my laptop. Thank you guys. i couldnt connect to my modem that was behind a wall three meters away, it was really sad, but no more :D

I was using a custom fix https://medium.com/@vxp/linux-mint-rtl8 ... e70a30a44d

but the latest update of linux mint 19.1 automatically resolved it.
Since 2003 on computers, since 2014 on Linux.

I would remove anything about rock.new_btcoex branch from that blog as it hasn't seen any real updates in years and running sudo make isn't needed

The best solution is

Code: Select all

sudo apt install git dkms build-essential
git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
sudo dkms add ./rtlwifi_new
sudo dkms install rtlwifi-new/0.6
This will not work if Secure Boot is enabled, users can now use mokutil --sb-state to check Secure Boot state

The dkms will recompile the modules whenever a new kernel is installed and will be in use after reboot, using make and sudo make install means you reboot into the new kernel and have to do

Code: Select all

cd rtlwifi_new
make clean
make
sudo make install
And then reboot again to have working wifi
This fix has only been needed recently because of a commit to kernel 4.15.0-32 or 33 broke the antenna selection, bug report is at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1788997
