How to choose and install wifi driver? Inspiron 1501[SOLVED]

Post by treehouse » Wed Oct 14, 2015 6:21 am

Hi guys,

I'm a noob to Linux and on a steep learning curve. I was given a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista, and I've been desperate to move on from my XP before it breaks, so I made myself a live DVD of Mint 17.2 Mate, tweaked the BIOS and it's up and running (I made that sound easy, didn't I? ). I've now hit the apparently common problem with this laptop, that the wifi isn't supported/recognised/whatever. I've got Internet through Ethernet cable tho.

My online searches suggest that it's a driver that's needed for the Broadcom BCM4311 card, and I found this resource page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... er/bcm43xx which seems to be posted in several discussions as a "solution", but I don't really understand it. It talks about things like "STA drivers", "Upstream drivers", etc., which I haven't got my head round. It looks like I've got the option of an open source b43 driver or the "ndiswrapper" to use the Windows one.

Some of these instructions give links to other pages, but I don't know if I just go there in FF and download whatever looks right (b43?), then what (run?) or if I should enter the given instructions into the terminal. Some bits indicate that there's an installer package, others that they depend on kernel packages (or something!). To make matters more interesting, these are ubuntu instructions (which I know Mint is based on, but even so) there are headers like "12.04 (Precise Pangolin) - 14.04 (Trusty Tahr)". If anyone can step me through it or shed some light, I'd appreciate it very much. I've got a bit more idea from other threads here on the same topic, but it seems each system requires different solutions.

I don't actually know if it can install the required driver while I'm running Mint off a live DVD, or if I need to install first - I realise that many settings aren't persistent. The disk is closed, and I don't know where it would save it, so would it be to DL every time I booted from the DVD? It might be worth installing or configuring whatever is missing/wrong in Live mode to check this distro will work on the machine before I install it.

I appreciate it makes sense to segregate problems here, but I'll mention this in case it's important to the whole thing:- on booting up, I get error reports. On shutting down, they remain on-screen, the disk is ejected, but in fact the laptop doesn't completely power down until I hold the power key for a hard reset. The report says:

Code: Select all

Hello Treehouse and Welcome to Linux and Mint,

You need to install the b43 driver for that card it should be fairly simple -- I'm not in mate at the moment but you should find an additional driver app in the Control panel or in the menu under administration.
run that app first it should offer to install the correct driver for you wireless card. If it does not go to synaptic package manager in the administration menu and hit reload, then do a search for firmware-b43-installer and install that , reboot wireless should now work, if not go to a terminal and post the output of
the following command:

Code: Select all

rfkill list
Good luck :)

Do not use the driver in additional drivers! Just use

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
or use Synaptic package manager to install firmware-b43-installer and reboot. If the driver from driver manager is installed (Broadcom STA) it will blacklist the driver for your ethernet

Thanks guys. I tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
and rebooted. No joy, unfortunately. To remind you, I'm doing this running the live dvd, not an install. Does that make a difference? I pulled the ethernet cable, rebooted and thought it would find the wifi network(s) available, but no. I plugged in a Belkin wifi dongle I've got lying around and hey presto, I have wifi through that, so really it wouldn't be a terrible disaster if I have to use the dongle, just a bit of a loose end to fix if I can. At least I can now move away from the router and sit in comfort!

It may also be significant, as I said earlier, that it doesn't shut down or restart as I imagined it would - in either case, it just shuts down Linux with the error report still on screen (among a load of 'U' characters) and sits there doing nothing. So my restart was another hard reset - would this have broken the install, I wonder? The terminal seemed to report success in installing the driver. If it's of any use, here's the output.

You could try

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43
after installing the firmware but it usually hangs..it does work after installing to a hard drive

As JeremyB has said.

This may not work with the LiveDVD though what happened before was you lost the driver when you rebooted as the Live DVD doesn't retain changes when you reboot.

You'll most likely need to do an install to the HD to get it working. If You do not want to do that you could always run it in a Virtual Machine Like Virtualbox.
good luck.

OK, I took the plunge and installed, then did the

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
On rebooting, I've still got no wifi on the internal card, just with the dongle. Synaptic Package Manager shows that firmware-b43-installer is there, and b43-fwcutter. Has anyone got any idea what I should do from this point, please? It would be great not to have to use the dongle.

I tried

Code: Select all

rfkill list
(with the dongle in) and get

Code: Select all

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
1: phy1: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
I wouldn't actually mind if I break ethernet functionality, btw.

You need to first check to make sure the b43 driver is not blacklisted.

you can do that this way.
Depending on which desktop version of Mint your running go to a terminal and type

Code: Select all

gksu <name of your text editor>
(Without the brackets.

It will ask you for your password. The text editor will be different depending upon which desktop your using. for Cinnamon is gedit , if it's mate it would be pluma.
once the text editor comes up open this file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf look down through the list if you see b43 blacklist place a # in front of it and save the file.
then reboot check again see if wifi works.

Thank you kindly, kc1di.

The only match for "b43" in that file is:

Code: Select all

# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx
I don't know whether you would still recommend your original suggestion - I used the apt command after JeremyB said
Do not use the driver in additional drivers!
. :| ...but anyway, it seems to be installed and not blacklisted, if I understand that right.

I'm running Mate, by the way: more system data in my first post if you want it. I am still getting problems when restarting - sometimes (I'm thinking it's every other time), it doesn't boot, just sits there with a blank screen, so I hard reset and start it again - this (second) time it often goes through its normal memory tests and then comes to a prompt including different options for booting Mint, and boots ok from there. It reports errors on booting, which I think are still something like "..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" and "ata3: softreset failed (device not ready)", as it did from Live DVD. I'll check those more carefully if I get chance and maybe need to post them in the relevant forum.

Or maybe this old Inspiron is toast. I must say, I'm impressed how fast Mint is once it's up and running on such a low-spec machine...and enjoying tweaking things.

Thanks again both of you,
treehouse

Re: How to choose and install wifi driver? Inspiron 1501

Even the USB wifi doesn't like the WEP encryption being used

Code: Select all

zd1211rw 1-7:1.0 wlan0: disabling HT/VHT due to WEP/TKIP use
Can you change the encryption settings on the wifi router to WPA2 only?

And we could set the regulatory setting with

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set GB

treehouse, in your post from Wednesday you said:

The only match for "b43" in that file is:

Code: Select all
# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx

That looks to me like the wireless card is blacklisted. Try putting a # in front of the line blacklist bcm43xx

That line is ok as it just blacklists a driver that no longer exists

Thanks again people - I'll change the router setting when I get time and see if that works. That line looked a bit suspicious to me as well. A long time ago when I was trying to get a softphone to work, my manager messed about with all sorts on my router, so I reckon he's probably changed it. He never got the softphone to work!

@edwardr, I think it means that it has blacklisted a different one "bcm43xx" because that has been replaced by b43, the one I installed. No? I think the commented line gives the reason for the blacklisted item (uncommented).

SOLVED! Thanks JeremyB, I changed my router settings to WPA2 this evening and I think that's what's fixed it. I say I think, because it's just possible that I missed the left-click menu on the network icon earlier, after the installation of b43. It's unusual and rather confusing for an app to have two different context menus. I did find them at the beginning of all this, so I probably tried them, but I was surprised just now to see a big list of all the networks in the area - and changing my router settings wouldn't have changed that. The only way I'd know is to undo the router change. Anyway, it was worth updating the security, as I've now learned with some searching....especially as I'm with TalkTalk which has just got hacked!

Could you tell me what this is

Code: Select all

    sudo iw reg set GB
and whether I should do it?

I'll edit the title to add "SOLVED". Thanks again to everyone who helped with this.
