[Solved]: WiFi keeps dropping out

Post by hesham »

Hello everybody,
i am running Linux Mint 17.3 KDE 64-bit and i am having the most annoying trouble with WiFi connection.
My WiFi keeps dropping out although it still connected, but stops sending and receiving data. The only thing i could do is to disconnect from the WiFi and reconnect again, but it happens again. Does anyone understand the problem and how to fix it?

We can try a newer version of the wireless modules using backports and get newer firmware from intel

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v4.4.2/backports-4.4.2-1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf backports-4.4.2-1.tar.gz
cd backports-4.4.2-1
make defconfig-wifi
make
sudo make install
wget https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi-3160-ucode-16.242414.0.tgz
tar -zxvf iwlwifi-3160-ucode-16.242414.0.tgz
cd iwlwifi-3160-ucode-16.242414.0
sudo cp iwlwifi-3160-16.ucode /lib/firmware/
Reboot

Had to edit a typo

I'm having the exact same issue, wifi stops forwarding traffic but maintains connection and association with AP. I tried your steps above however the issue persists.

I think your original thought of power management may be an issue as I've only ever had it happen on battery power and almost immediately after I plug the external power source in, traffic flows again.

sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off

Seems to have cleared it all up

I just bought a "new" Dell Latitude D430 for next to nothing, installed Linux Mint 19.3 and it worked great (even with 2 GBs of RAM) EXCEPT WiFi would fall out after a while (like the others, it stayed connected but no Internet). I guessed it might have had something to do with power settings. (I've never had problems like this with Intel WiFi cards before so very happy to find this fix.) Thanks Pjotr!

Good to hear that it's working now. :)
Here's the new link for the fix (the old link has been discontinued):
