Re: Mint 18 Wifi drivers
Could I just load 17 instead maybe? Did 17 have issues connecting to wifi? I've been using it on my desktop but no experience running on this acer notebook

Re: Mint 18 Wifi drivers
I had the same issue with LM18 and LM18.1, I was running 17.3 and the WIFI was working just fine, could never get 18 or 18.1 to connect, I finally tried Korora and everything worked just fine, Lubuntu worked as well, it is my opinion that there is something with the drivers that is missing, it could be a bug in the network connection, something is not correct, Jeremy did a lot to assist me with trying to get it to work, but in the end nothing we attempted worked. It seems that there are quite a few posts here about the WIFI not working in 18 and 18.1.
If you are not part of the future then Get out of the way!

The report tells me that they should try LM18.
I would like to know what make defconfig command was used when they installed the backports

Re: Mint 18.2 Wifi driver missing [Solved]
Hi, I was attempting to get wifi working with a new internet Shaw cable (Canada) connected to a Technicolor modem connected to a Dlink 605L rounter connected by ethernet cable to a 10-year-old HP Pavilion laptop DV5000z with AMD Turion 64 with ATI graphics, running on OS Mint 18 KDE. At first the Dlink wizard on a Firefox page recognized my settings, even my ISP with password key. But on the same page--"not activated Dlink service" and "not connected." So am I missing a wifi driver? There is no sign of wifi connections in the tray at the very top of my screen, though there is one for Networks. Moreover, the hardware On button for my dinosauran HP Pavilion laptop's wifi light remains off when I push it! Finally, I tried updating via my Driver Manager to get a wifi driver but that manager told me I was using a proprietary driver (amd64-microcode) with the singular option of "not use this device." Help please.
P.S. All the modem lights are on as expected; ditto the router lights.
P.S. In About:config I found three items that contain "wifi," and all in Default position, including "network.tickle-wifi.enabled;false." The other two were the same words but with "delay" (value=16) and "duration" (value=400) endings.
Following Jeremey's initial instructions for another wifi inquiry, here is paste.bin for my Konsole results. [My apology for not using pastebin.com where I couldn't find the Submit button.]

Re: Mint 18.2 Wifi driver missing
DoLee wrote:Hi, I was attempting to get wifi working with a new internet Shaw cable (Canada) connected to a Technicolor modem connected to a Dlink 605L rounter connected by ethernet cable to a 10-year-old HP Pavilion laptop DV5000z with AMD Turion 64 with ATI graphics, running on OS Mint 18 KDE.

Re: Mint 18 Wifi drivers
Eureka! Those two steps worked like a charm. Thanks so very much.

P.S. I gather, after a short search, that my Mint 18.2 default firewall includes coverage of this wifi.

Re: Mint 18 Wifi drivers
Hi,
Thought I'd add my experience to this thread.
I have 2017 i5-7500 Lenovo ES570 with Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter, and have problems with wifi which are partially solved.
On initial install of Mint 18.2-MATE (4.8.0-53-generic #56~16.04.1-Ubuntu) wifi wouldn't auto connect without restarting Network Manager - sudo service NetworkManager restart. Then wifi would disconnect randomly - which was hopeless as I use NAS mounts so the system kept freezing. And all the time its slow - very slow for a 801ac on 5Ghz wifi. I did some googling and found there are known bugs/problems with the ath10k driver for this adapter (there are several threads, some covering the firmware files, and this one that covers the performance issue, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1670041).
I upgraded to linux-firmware.157.12, set wifi powersave off, disabled IPv6 - no difference.
I replaced hw3.0/board-2.bin as several threads suggest, with a 2017 copy - no difference.
I upgraded kernel to 4.10.0-35-generic - BETTER. 8 times out of 10 the wifi autoconnects, and it never drops. But performance is not great - a bit better than my old i3 laptop on 2.4GHz - and not unusable, but for big file transfers I always use the 1Gb wire.
I'm just waiting for proper fix to ALL the QCA6174 issues to become available........
