[SOLVED] Dell E5570 Wireless Unavailable

Post by mstarks01 » Sun Jun 19, 2016 4:22 pm

Hi there,

I'm having a problem with my Atheros wireless card in my new laptop using Mint 17.3. After some searching, I found some posts about installing updated firmware and backported drivers, so I did that. The firmware version I installed is 1.158 and backports is 4.4.2-1. That helped insofar as Network Manager now sees that there is a card there, but no networks can be discovered. It is listed in a state of "unavailable." Here is some diagnostic info and, thanks in advance for any help.

Did you attempt to install any other firmware than that? Those errors with -11 behind usually meant the wrong board.bin file was used

Nope. Specifically, this is what I did (which I think came from you helping someone else in this forum):

Code: Select all

wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.158_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.158_all.deb

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v4.4.2/backports-4.4.2-1.tar.gz
tar -zxvf backports-4.4.2-1.tar.gz
cd backports-4.4.2-1
make defconfig-wifi
make
sudo make install

You may have a special case here

Code: Select all

sudo rm /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/*

Code: Select all

sudo wget https://github.com/FireWalkerX/ath10k-firmware/blob/7e56cbb94182a2fdab110cf5bfeded8fd1d44d30/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin?raw=true /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board.bin

Code: Select all

sudo wget https://github.com/FireWalkerX/ath10k-firmware/blob/7e56cbb94182a2fdab110cf5bfeded8fd1d44d30/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1?raw=true /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin
Reboot and we will find out if the Dell version is different

Thank you sooo much. It has been quite awhile since I have had network driver issues in Linux and I got used to everything just working. So, when I got this new laptop it was a bummer to be chained to my desk. :)

Anyway, everything works now. For the archives: be careful with cutting and pasting the commands above, as there may be a space missing and in one of them https is referenced twice. Just download the files from that location and move them to that directory under /lib.
