WIFI not working on my recently bought Lenovo T400[SOLVED]

Post by cpytron » Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:46 pm

I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from ebay. I have it in a Linux USB boot right now and haven't hit the install button yet.

I can't get it to connect to wifi. I put the password in (its correct) and the connecting symbol will spin, then stop after about 30 seconds and say disconnected.

I've tried

Code: Select all

ifconfig wlp3s0 down
then

Code: Select all

ifconfig wlp3s0 up
and still the same results.

The ifconfig says (and I am having to manually type this, can't copy and paste)

Code: Select all

wlp3s0 Link encap:Ethernet UP BROADCAST MULTICAST
and on my working laptop it says

Code: Select all

wlo1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:26:82:c4:07:7e
          inet addr:192.168.0.4 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::d20a:9d02:6f04:9c61/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:3408547 errors:0 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:1837889
          TX packets:1935304 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:530858715 (530.8 MB) TX bytes:176832931 (176.8 MB)
          Interrupt:19
I noticed mine says "RUNNING" and the T400 doesn't.

Can anyone help me get this running? And I don't have access to ethernet, only wifi, and this only works on my HP laptop I am using to post this

You might want to check the encryption on your wifi router and see if it is WPA2 only with no WEP or TKIP.

Check iwconfig on the problem laptop and see if power management is enabled

It is WPA2 with WEP. Also, I just checked and the password is still the same as it is supposed to be.

And Power Management is on, and it is in Managed Mode.

You do not want WEP or power management enabled as they cause problems

To disable power management use

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig wlp3s0 power off

I tried that and still no luck.

I booted it into Windows 7 its current OS and it says it is connected to the WIFI but it has no internet access.

I checked and it is automatically obtaining an IP address.

The windows troubleshoot says "Wireless Network Connection 4" doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

But would that really effect Linux Mint?

It's funny how you overlook the most simple of things when fighting against a problem with computers. Then it turns out, it was so so simple.

After trying so many different things, the one thing I overlooked was simply "Restarting the Router". lol
