Wifi cutting out constantly

Hi all. Early this year I upgraded from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18.1 and started to have problems with my Wifi connectivity. It drops out on my desktop, a notification pops up and it seems to lose the wireless network name (i.e. it is not listed in the network manager).
Things I tried and conclusions I (correctly or not) drew:
  • Switching the wireless off and back on again occasionally works but more often not. The time at which it cuts out varies. Sometimes I can use it for an our but on average 10 mins is more likely. A reboot restores the connection. So it not permanent and linked to software.
  • I swapped the Wifi card out with a different make but that showed the same problem. So it is not the card
  • Win7 on the same desktop has no network issue, so it is unlikely the hardware.
  • I switched back to Mint 17.3 but to my amazement had the same problem, so it is not Mint 18. The Wifi card worked fine before the upgrade. Kernel??
  • Switch the IPv6 off on the network manager as the logs stated something about IPv6 (can't find it in the currently log).
  • My laptop runs the same Mint 18.1 and is fine with the network, so it is not the network.
I searched this and other forums but am nowhere nearer in finding what the problem is. It is incredibly disruptive.

Has anyone seen this before and can point me in a direction that might resolve it?

I think your errors are caused by wifi power management being enabled, in terminal enter

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

It appears it has worked. What did the command change? As far as I understand the command you change a parameter wifi.powersave = 3 to wifi.powersave = 2 in the default-wifi-powersave-on.conf file. I have failed to understand why my switch back to Mint 17 not resolved the issue.
However, non the less grateful for your advice and the ability to use the network for more than 10-20 minutes at a time.

I am not sure why going back to LM17 did not fix the issue but I know LM18 after updates will try to enable wifi power management through network manager due to a change upstream in Ubuntu and the command I posted tells network manager to leave wifi power management disabled
