No wifi in my hp laptop

Postby Kevin RED » Mon Oct 02, 2017 8:36 am

I bought a new hp bx series laptop and installed the new mint 18.2 on it.

I didn't ticked the install third party drivers at install option during my installation.

Now when I started my mint after installation,I couldn't get the wifi network option.

I tried installing broadcom drivers but no luck.

No wifi.nothing.

When I checked my driver manager settings I can only find Intel microcode driver as the only proprietary driver in use. Nothing else..

I want wifi somehow in my laptop. Can anybody please help..

Was that already in use? If not, try enabling it and reboot.

Hello Kevin RED and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
Could you go to a terminal and execute this command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Then post the output here.
Also the output of

Code: Select all

rfkill list

Take a picture of the screen if you have to.
Can you connect the machine via Ethernet? if so just copy and past the out put.
If you have a connection got to control center and Driver Manager and install the suggested driver.

It all depends on which WiFi card is in your laptop. The inxi command listed in a previous post will help you determine that.
If indeed it is a Broadcom then since it is a new machines my guess is that you will need the newer drivers -
broadcom-sta(wl) - That is the one I needed for my new ASUS PCI card in my desktop that uses Broadcom drivers.
For more in-depth info on Broadcom drivers and which one you will need, try this website:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43/#b43legacy.2C_b43.2C_STA.2C_brcm80211.2C_..._the_full_story

Also, another way to find drivers that you >might< need besides the Driver Manager is to look in the Synaptics Package manager.
Do a search on "microcode" and "firmware". Be careful as not all it shows will be what you need.

Please give us the inxi and rfkill commands- It will help know which drivers may be missing.
If it is a broadcom - there are two different driver sets depending on the card in use. The microcode driver normally has to do with
the cpu not wireless.
as an alternative you can run the wireless script in my signature and post it's results also.

Oops, my bad, "wireless" is the search in Synaptics that found the Broadcom-sta driver I needed.

I can't find much info on that wireless card, Think it's a Realtek but the kernel module that is being loaded is a Broadcom driver.
if you loaded a broadcom driver you'll need to uninstall it and load the realtek driver in it's place then reboot.
if you indeed have a broadcom wireless card it is not showing in any of the outputs. so it is either broken or turned off.
is there a switch on that machine that turns wireless on and off?
The rfkill command should have had more than bluetooth offered.

If you know what wireless card is in your machine please post it here.

I installed broadcom driver initially, I didn't checked whether i had a broadcorm card at that time. Maybe it is due to that procedure why i got a broadcom driver in the output.

I think the card that i have is a realtek one.

so i want to uninstall broadcom and install realtek now?
And if so, i dont know how to install a realtek driiver, please guide me

The wireless is basically unsupported at this time it is a Realtek RTL8723DE
Realtek might have the source code to Larry Finger in the next 3 months
