[Solved] Old ThinkPads have connection issues

Postby hrmcrm » Fri Oct 13, 2017 12:28 am

Original subject was "18.2 KDE 32bit will not connect to building network" but that is not the correct issue. See Sun Oct 15, 2017 10:33 pm post below.
Mint 18.2 KDE is running on two laptops, one 32-bit the other 64-bit. Both connect to our home router wifi correctly.

The 64-bit connects to our building wifi network correctly.

The 32-bit will not connect to our building wifi network.

Network Manager settings appear to be the same on the two machines for both networks.

The 64-bit machine has

Code: Select all

howard@X201LM182KDE64 ~ $ inxi -Nn
Network:   Card-1: Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
IF: enp0s25 state: down mac: 5c:ff:35:0c:fd:16
           Card-2: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 driver: iwlwifi
IF: wlp2s0 state: up mac: 00:23:14:7c:83:e4
howard@X201LM182KDE64 ~ $
When connecting to the building wifi (SFTInternet), syslog shows

Code: Select all

What needs to change on the 32-bit machine to get it to access the building wifi like it does with the home router?
Thanks,

The only difference I see if that UFW is blocking some traffic on the 32 bit machine. Do you have static IP's set for these machines on the home router?

I tried with the firewall disabled, but it made no difference. IP addresses are assigned by the home router; they are not static.

Here's the syslog for the 32-bit box trying to connect to the building wifi with firewall disabled

Re: Old ThinkPads have connection issues

Postby hrmcrm » Mon Oct 16, 2017 1:33 am

Testing wifi with a number of ThinkPads indicates this is a hardware-related issue, not Mint. I've been trying to connect to both my home router and a building network using 2.4 and 5 GHz bands as available.

X201 has Mint 18.2 KDE 64bit installed, dual-booting with Windows 10 64bit. It connects to both networks and both bands with both operating systems. Booted into Mint 18.2 KDE 32-bit live session, it also connects to both networks and both bands.

T61 has Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64bit installed, dual-booting with Windows 10 64bit. Both of those as well as a Mint 18.2 KDE 32-bit live session connect to the building network and reach the Internet. They all see the home router, but cannot get a connection.

X60 has Mint 18.2 KDE 32bit installed, dual-booting with Windows 10 32bit. Both of those connect to the home router and reach the Internet. Mint disconnects when trying "setting network address" on the building network. Win10 connects to the building network and sees other devices on it, but cannot reach the Internet.

X41 has Mint 18.2 KDE 32bit installed on one hard drive and Mint 18.2 MATE 32bit on another. Both of those operating systems can connect to the home router but not the building network.

T23 has Mint 18.2 Xfce 32bit installed. It connects to the home router and reaches the Internet. It sees but does not connect to the building network.

So, lots of combinations and permutations, but except for X201, there are connectivity problems.

How can I try to make these connections that will give more insight to what the problem is?
Thanks,
Howard

I would try this on the problem machine to keep Network Manager from enabling wifi power management

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/*

Reboot, it could be something with the wifi kernel module as ipw2200 is one of the older ones

I'm away from my pile of ThinkPads for a few days, so I'll try this when i get home.

The issue seems to lie with the hardware+driver combinations. I have a USB wifi adapter, Belkin F9L1101v2, and I installed it with several of the ThinkPads. Typical info is

Code: Select all

howard@X60-LM18KDE ~ $ inxi -Nn
Network:   Card-1: Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: e1000e
IF: ens2 state: down mac: 00:16:d3:22:8a:11
           Card-2: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection driver: iwl3945
IF: wls3 state: up mac: 00:13:02:12:08:f8
           Card-3: Belkin F9L1101v2 802.11abgn Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8192DU] driver: rtl8192du
           IF: wlx94103e6afa59 state: N/A mac: N/A
howard@X60-LM18KDE ~ $
Generally, it would connect to the home router, but not the building network, SFTInternet. T61 running Cinnamon seemed to give inconsistent results; I'll test it more. X201 that connected to all with its internal adapter could get to home but not SFT through Belkin.

I returned to the X41, and today's update included WPA from 2.4-0ubuntu6 to 2.4-0ubuntu6.2. That seems to have fixed the problem here for both KDE and MATE desktops. This was without doing

Connections work with both the internal adapter and the Belkin USB adapter. VPN works with them.
