Wifi Intermittent on Samsung Series 9 laptop

Post by gtj »

Hello.

There are a few days since I installed Linux Mint 18.2 on my laptop which is a Samsung Series 9 900x3c.
It's an i5 3517u with 4gb RAM and an Intel Centrino 6235 PCI-e Wireless card.

These specific laptops were notorious for having wifi problems in their early days but the last few years and after a few updates by Microsoft and Intel, I hadn't had any problems with connection drops running Windows.

After I installed Mint there are connection drops almost every 20 minutes when I'm connected to the University network (guest or eduroam). I haven't noticed any similar behavior when I'm at home though but I might be wrong as the laptop does not get much use when I'm at home.

What I tried:
- I set power saving to off for the wireless adapter and even reloaded the iwlwifi kernel module with option 11n_disable set to 1, in order to disable 802.11N, as I've read there are problems with a broken ''N'' driver.

-I also tried an external USB network adapter with no success.

A

Code: Select all

service network-manager restart
will fix the problem temporarily until of course it drops again.. I thought about uninstalling network manager and install WICD instead but there are conflicting information with regards to uninstalling network manager on mint, saying that doing so it also uninstalls the Cinamon desktop, rendering the system inoperable.

I even thought about upgrading my network card to something newer like Intel's 7260 Plus.

Could anyone please be so kind and advise if there's anything else I should try? I love my new OS/computer which fulfills my needs but, obviously, that's a dealbreaker for me and I will sadly have to revert to Windows if I don't find a viable solution. :(

Re: Wifi Intermittent on Samsung Series 9 laptop

Post by JeremyB »

There is no conflict about removing network manager if you are using Cinnamon, it will remove Cinnamon.
Did you disable wifi powermanagement with a command similar to

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = .*/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
I would also try setting the iwlwifi 11n_disable parameter to 8
This might be a issue with 5Ghz rather than 2.4 Ghz as I have seen the signal strength have very wide swings using 5Ghz where 2.4 Ghz is stable
If you want to disable network manager to use wicd, do

Code: Select all

systemctl disable network-manager.service
reboot if you need to use network manager in the future

Code: Select all

systemctl enable network-manager.service
You may have to enter your password twice after running the command

Thank you so much for your detailed response.

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = .*/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
reruns an error. However, I can see in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d that powersave is set to ''2''.

I also tried disabling parameter 8 on iwlwifi 11n driver but did not help while WICD does not work at all. It scans and finds available networks but when I connect to them, there's no internet.

Should I buy and install an Intel 7260 plus? Will it help being that a newer hardware device as opposed to my old 6235?

I don't know what else I should try...

You might try telling us what the error is.

Thanks for your reply.
The error I was getting was probably due to ''sudo''. I re-run it as root and did not return any errors.
However, the powersave option hasn't changed. It was and still is set to 2.

I just found a very cheap ($5) Atheros AR5B22 on Ebay which works in Linux with the well supported ath9k driver.

I bought it. I will check if it fixes the problem and will report back.

Just an update on this.
Today I installed the Atheros AR5B22 and my laptop's behavior has not changed with regards to unreliable network connection.

This means that the problem either lies on the network(not possible as I didn't have issues with windows previously) or on the OS itself.

Next thing I'm going to try is another distro as I want to take all my chances to stay Linux before returning to Windows...

I would suspect issues with the wireless router at this point. I would at least restart the router

I thought about that but I can't obviously as I'm having to do with Uni's guest network. Therefore, there is no access to such settings and also the possibility of it having an issue is quite thin. At the time I write this, my Android phone is also connected to the same network with no problems.

The alternative might be to turn off cell data on the phone and use it to USB tether to the computer

Yes that's not a bad idea. I might try it.

For the time being, I applied another possible fix and will see how it goes

My first post in this thread should have disabled power management on wifi, similar to https://askubuntu.com/a/860754/300665 but easier to do for new users

Yes, I did it as you suggested but thought about applying that one even it being surplus just in case the wifi power management is being (re)enabled somehow. I'm just trying all possible reasons for the issue.

For the time being, I haven't had a drop for almost half an hour now. Let's see how it goes.

Thank you very much for all your help and support!
