I cannot detect Wi-Fi 5ghz

Postby tonilib » Tue Oct 24, 2017 5:43 am

Hi there,

I have linux mint 18.1 Serena. I am travelling at the moment in Malaysia. In my hotel there is a 5ghz Wi-Fi but I cannot detect it with Linux. I can just detect the 2.4ghz Wi-Fi. I need to upload 200GB to my cloud and the faster the better. What can I do to detect it? My phone samsung s6 can detect it.

My card support 5ghz. I have all ready run iwlist chan from channel 36 to 166 several channels are 5ghz.

Post results for

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net

An option might be to connect to wifi using the phone, turn off cellular data, then use the phone's tethering through USB or wifi hotspot on 2.4Ghz

You cannot do tethering with a wifi connection on your mobile just with your Data allowance.

the output of that command is:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net

See the info about setting the country code for the country you are in, unfortunately there is a chance that it won't work because Broadcom has some channel restrictions build into the wl module

My phone allows tethering over USB using a wifi connection with cell data disabled
