Connections tray icons backwards

Post by dquinn618 » Tue Nov 28, 2017 12:20 pm

I dual booted Mint Mate beside Win 10 on a HP Pavilion laptop. Everything is working fine with it (sort of, thus far  ) except the wifi only connects in the same room as the router. It's a RTL8723BE and apparently this is a common issue with that wifi adapter. There are many, many fixes on the internet. I must have spent 20 hours trying to get it to work because it is a great computer (1TB HD, 8 GHz RAM). But nothing has worked.

So to use that laptop on-line I have to be next to the router. Sometimes the Mint Mate tray icon is fine, showing either the plugs for Ethernet connection or the strength bars icon when using wifi. But most often when I boot Mate the icons are backwards showing the plugs even when using just wifi. Then when I do plug in the Ethernet then it shows the wifi bars icon.

Is there a fix for the tray icons showing the connections wrong?

Did you manage to get these issues sorted? If not, it's worth checking if TKIP is in use on your router; I've read that this can cause connection issues. You could also try another WiFi card, usually easy to swap. I've had consistently good results with the Atheros cards e.g. AR5B225.

Not sure about the icon toggling issue, sorry.
