Wifi signal very poor after new Linux install

Post by thegutterpoet »

I have recently moved from Windows 10 to Linux Mint on my desktop. The wireless signal has been poor since starting. Everything else works fine.

My macbook pro here on the desk next to the desktop sees 23.6mb per second whilst the desktop (linux Mint latest version with qualcomm atheros ar2417 wireless network adapter {AR5007G 802.1bg} (rev 01) ) sees 2-3mb/second. At best!

I realise that the desktop wireless card is a little long in the fang, maybe 4 or 5 years old! And the macbook pro is more modern, yet even my HTC M7 which is 4 years old gets massively faster wireless in the same spot, and I didnt notice the issue when running Windows previously.

Can anyone offer assistance? or must i purchase a more modern wireless PCI card??

If you are using Linux Mint 18, see https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php ... st13614520

tried the tips there, thank you Jeremy, other than checking the router WP settings. No change at all with the
sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/*

and

sudo iw reg get (which does not lead to 00)

and

setting the ip6 to ignore.

Linux shows the strength of the wireless at 43% which doesn't help, not does it match my phone or macbook. Something else is to blame here!

Check the router settings, I don't really look at the percentage wifi signal as it doesn't matter in some cases. I can find my neighbors wifi at close to 400 meters when they are home

Next, check the settings in the router. WPA2-AES is preferred; not any WPA and WPA2 mixed mode and certainly not TKIP. Second, if your router is capable of N speeds, you may have better connectivity with a channel width of 20 MHz in the 2.4 GHz band instead of automatic 20/40 MHz, although it is likely to affect N speeds. I also have better luck with a fixed channel, either 1, 6 or 11, rather than automatic channel selection. Also, be certain the router is not set to use N speeds only; auto B, G and N is preferred. After making these changes, reboot the router.

It is set to WPA2-PSK
AES is not an option, in the router security tab, only WPA2-PSK and WPA+WPA2-PSK.

Channel width is 20/40MHZ Frequency is 2.4ghz.
Speed 130Mbps

Speed options are 802.11b/g/n or 802.11b/g

it is set to the former.

It is becoming a real bother. Making the thing too annoying to use for anything internet related. So any further help will be hugely appreciated! I really wish to stick with Linux not return to Windows. Everything feels smoother, but this damn wireless issue...ruins the experience!

Tried adding in all available updates, which has made very little difference.Perhaps the speed is now closer to 2-4 than 2-3, with the other devices right next to the desktop happily at 20+mbps.

I am amazed.
Does the analysis of any technical issue not start with the screen output of the terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
I wonder a bit how it should possible to start talking about (wifi) hardware and (wifi) drivers, without having a basic overview of the hard- and software configuration?

I thought the fact that it worked fine and dandy on Windows and the model of the PCI would be sufficient to seek advice, comrade!

As for the command you kindly suggested...

So I either need to change my wireless pci card or return to Windows?

I would actually use the Update Manager, View/Linux kernels and install the newest 4.4.0 kernel, reboot and hold Shift Key until the grub menu appears, then scroll to Advanced Options and select the 4.4.0 kernel to boot into and see if it works better

tried that!

It seems, with all the things i have tried to sometimes be as high as 5mbs then often 2-3mbs.

Maybe its the wifi adapter? It is fairly old after all...just strange to see such huge differences in the same spot in the house between devices. Especially as I do not recall Windows 10 ever running so sloth over the wifi.

You could try an Intel 7260 device and see if that works any better in the desktop pc or a TP Link WN722N 150 Mbps Version 1 if they can still be found

Ive found plenty of options for pci on eBay! Why not try a cheap one and the antennae is never fully screwed on the current one. Maybe this is the cause...or the thing is simply old and haggard.

Will any pci fit the same socket?

What of pc mini?

The antenna not being fully screwed in could cause a connection issue. I would look at the wifi card you have and compare to what you want to buy, also search the internet to see if the chipset is supported in linux before buying

And how strange...just as I start peeking for what fits my system, run another speed test...and I find 15mbps...Maybe it is the antennae?

I have replaced the wifi card with 2.4G/5Ghz Wireless 450Mbps PCI-E Card WiFi Network Antenna LAN Ethernet AC990.

and my macbook 2014 pro right next to the desktop, gets 14.5mb per second...whereas the desktop gets 2.6mbs.

is this just a sign that for whatever reason, Linux Mint does not fit my hardware very well and I should move to Ubuntu?

Re: Wifi signal very poor after new Linux install

Tried that, thanks and it remains the same...

Can it be that my system is now too far from the modem?

Makes no sense when my phone and macbook stay superquick when in the same position as my desktop. Phone and macbook are 14mbps. Mint on this desktop is 2-4mbps.

Anything else to try? Will Ubuntu be maybe better for my wifi connection? or another distro?
