I am looking into upgrading my very old small network adapter which has a removable external antenna to one of the many newer 802.11 AC models. However I see that the drivers for the RTL8811AU chipset are not included in Mint 18.2/18.3. I would like to hear from someone who successfully installed the drivers and the steps that are necessary, and even what model they are using, before I waste money buying one.
Here are some of the more popular adapters;

Hi "pjc123",
If you buy a WiFi adapter that is already supported by the Linux Kernels, then you will not have to install a driver for it, it will be "plug-n-play". But there is nothing wrong, or particularly difficult, in installing a driver either. (Sometimes installing a driver that is close to the chipset your wifi adapter uses will also work, like installing the RTL8812 driver may work well for the RTL8811 chipset.) FYI: If you update or upgrade to a newer Linux Kernel in the future, you may need to reinstall the driver.
