Wifi does not connect and keeps asking for password

Hello, I am new to Linux mint and this is the first time installing linux on this computer. For some reason the wifi does not work and it keeps asking me to supply a password (it does not seem to get passed the authentication stage). It can see all of the networks around me perfectly fine, but it cannot connect to my router. I checked and the Ethernet works perfectly fine, but I'd like to get the wifi running.

Things I have tried: changing the encrypion type on my router. Resetting the router. I have tried the other drivers: b43, and b43-legacy. I have also turned off the power saving function.

It appears that your wifi connection shows as "dormant".

I have the same exact problem with the same computer. It wokred fine with 18.3 KDE, so what's the difference. I switched to //cinnamon, because KDE crashed after the last update, so now I have a doorstop?

Hello Subcomfreak and welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
Great to have you here.

Here is something you can try.
Sometimes It's the authentication method that's being used, It must match what your wireless network expects. You can check what is being used by right clicking on the network manager icon in the panel. selecting edit connections then click on your wifi link and click edit again then go to the security tab and see what it's set for
mine works on wpa & wpa2 personal yours may have to be set differently depending upon your wireless router settings.

PS if it works on WEP you should try to reset the router to WPA because wep is no longer secure.

It was the exact same problem on the exact same model. A new thread would be redundant. I tried every mode of WEP WPA, etc. Nothing works. The same in Mate, KDE worked. it is a Linux Mint version problem.

Sounds like Mate looks like a good choice for now.

What I meant was that it doesn't work in Mate, either. It worked it KDE. KDE crashed, however, with the latest update. I'm ready to abandon Linux altogether at this point. It worked great for about a year, then went downhill rapidly.

I already had the router on WPA. & WPA2 That is the Comcast default. My laptop receives a strong signal. The password is right. Everything is entered the same way as in KDE. It is a Linux problem.

Don't give up it can be solved,
what you need to do though is start a separate thread, and go to the terminal an issue this command

and post the output in the new thread,
even though your problem sounds the same it may not be the same.

I installed today's updates to Linux Mint and it also upgraded to Firefox 58. It fixed the problem.
Like I said, it was a Linux problem.
