Netgear AC600 wifi USB adaptor not working on Linux

Post by old DOS N XP user » Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:46 pm

I bought a Netgear AC600 wireless USB Dual Band Adapter. It works with XP and not with Linux. .. Netgear was called and they were no help..say their software wont work on Linux, but is in development. Is it possible to get the thing to work on Linux? I still dont understand any of the terminal mode commands or what they do, or how they are used. My system is an old Dell tower model that use to run XP. (still dos on a 2nd HD) I can connect with an ethernet hard wire card installed in the cmptr, BUT I want to move it where there are no wires and don't want to run them.. I bought this dongle thing hoping to use it on Linux. It works fine on XP,(even does VOIP [in the same comptr i'm wanting to run Linux on]) but the install CD wont complete an install even under Wine. I think that I'm just missing something simple (I hope). I'm still very NEW at this Linux stuff and will need hand holding thru it...especially the terminal mode stuff. Can some one help?

Hello old DOS N XP user and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,

That adaptor is a bit difficult to get going and it will depend upon which chip set they used if it will work with linux at all.
here's a blog that may be of help: http://www.humans-enabled.com/2016/03/h ... tgear.html
You will need to be connect temporarily to Ethernet cable.
If you can't get it going in linux I would suggest buy an usb dongle know to work here are few possibilities.

good luck.

reply to 1st reply...
I went to the BLOG and tried to implement the instructions.. I had lots of typo's and retries I got to step 5 where it uses the make command... It bombed!!! the printed results follow:

mark@mark-Dimension-4600i ~/wireless_driver/rtl8812au_rtl8821au $ make

That build is not going to work , I think because your chipset is not rtl8821au.
Go to this blog https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... /reserve-7 and follow the instructions to find out which chip is in your,
If it is a realtek then it should be possible to make it work.

ok as for the lsusb command here is the output:

mark@mark-Dimension-4600i ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0846:9052 NetGear, Inc. A6100 AC600 DB Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8811AU]
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub {not above set ^}
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 05e1:202a Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
mark@mark-Dimension-4600i ~ $

now for the other reply: I went to the sight recommended and as you can see above the chip set is 8811au not 8812au.. I tryed the 8812 set of commands.. let me say that this was easier than typing it all in.. BUT it fails to recognise the adaptor is there after boot and plug in.. I'm guessing that the 8811 chipset is DIFFERENT than the 8812 by some slight variation that makes it not work! Also guessing that it is an OLDER variant.

The 8811au should be supported but the source code might be old, try

Code: Select all

sudo apt install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git
cd rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
sudo make -f Makefile.dkms install
Reboot

SUCCESS!!!!! I can't thank you enough! this is written with the Wifi adapter and NOT with the wire connected to the i-net! Man, I wish there was some way I could lean this stuff without trial and error. memory is difficult to now, so remembering what we have done will be rough too. I'll print the last solution and file it... AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH!
