Networks not recognised

Post by Spydah » Mon Feb 05, 2018 2:39 am

I'm brand new to Linux, so apologies if this question has already been answered elsewhere. I have an Acer Aspire 5741G laptop which I've set up to dual boot in Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 and Windows 10.
At home it connects perfectly with my WiFi. I recently took it into the office where I do some volunteer work and it instantly recognised about a dozen signals from surrounding offices and businesses. However it didn't list any of the three signals from our office routers. Meanwhile two fellow members, both using Linux (Linux Mint Cinnamon and Linux Light) had no problems. I tried treating the one I wanted to connect to as a hidden network and typed in the SSID, but that didn't help.
I then rebooted into Windows 10 and was able to log in, so it clearly isn't a hardware problem. In case it's relevant, the signal is in the 2.4 Mhz band.
Any suggestions, please? It's got me totally mystified.

Hello Spydah and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
Great to have you here :)

A couple things you can try:
right click on the Network Manager Icon in the panel and select edit connections
when it comes up highlight the wireless connection desired and then click on edit
click on the security tab and IPV6 in the dropdown box change it from automatic to ignore
Close out the box and see if it will find the router now?
The tips on this page may be worth looking at also. https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... t/internet

good luck.

Hello kc1di, and many thanks for your welcome and reply. It will be a couple of weeks until I'm back in the office and can try out your suggestions, but will most certainly give them a go.
The only thing I'm doubtful about is where you suggest that I highlight the wireless connection desired. The problem was that the wireless connection I wanted wasn't listed, only the ones from other nearby offices. However, I will double-check and report back.
