HP Laptop, new install of 18.3 "Sylvia" - No Wireless SOLVED

Post by Lilliburlero »

I'm a bit of a newbie with Linux, but getting there slowly.
Just installed 18.3 on an HP Laptop that just describes itself as "15.6 inch Intel Pentium 4Gb ram, 1Tb hard drive, black.

My problem, along with many others I'm sure, is - no wireless.
I have searched and googled and tried many 'copy/paste' solutions, but none work so far.
I have a feeling that maybe a driver for this machine doesn't exist.

The driver manager only lists something about Intel Microcode, and says at the bottom 'No proprietary drivers are in use'

Hope someone can help.
Please!

Connect your computer to the internet by means of a cable and install all available updates (notably the latest kernel of the 4.13 series, which should be a level 4 update).

Then reboot.

Does that help?

Applying that Intel Microcode in the Driver Manager has been what made WiFi work on several of my laptops. Just so you know.

...i think that's what will be needed for wireless on this system to be enabled:

I'd recommend to update all Levels 4 as Pjotr suggested (make sure the latest 4.13.x is installed as well), and then follow the instructions from the link above...

Many thanks chaps, that did it.
Did the micro thingy, then discovered I had 4.10, so did all the updates, rebooted and all fixed. Wireless working fine.
Now to see if I can get the Ham Radio Digi Keyer II working - but that's a different story.
Thanks again.
