wifi issues
and by "issues" i mean the computer rarely wants to list the house wifi on the list of available networks and when it does the signal is extremely weak and any attempt to connect always fails.
here are my wireless-info.txt results:
https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/xw4htnZxvc/
help is super appreciated! using the iphone/verizon's mobile hotspot feature to do internet things on my desktop is definitely slow and frustrating. haha.

Re: wifi issues
OK, try this:
1. Fully update your system, including *all* updates from level 3 and 4. You can (temporarily) select the most aggressive update policy for that.
2. Reboot.
3. Configure your wireless network in the best possible way:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... tywireless
4. Select the best *fixed* channel for your wireless network:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... st-channel
(item 1, left column)
5. Disable power management *for your wifi*:

Re: wifi issues
Obviously I should have specified in the first place that it's not my network and I do not have access to the router just the password. So I'm not able to do steps 3 and 4 because they're out of my power but, I did do steps 1 and 2 of course. For what it's worth the PS3 in the same room very close to the Linux computer picks up the network just fine. So there's not any kind of software patch for the wireless I could run? I'm beginning to think my sister's suggestion that I might have to get a booster/extender might be right, unfortunately (was really hoping that all I would need to do is download some driver(s) and this would all finally be resolved).
But thank you very much for at least trying (and I mean that, in case this comes across sarcastic or anything).

Yeah and it appeared to do nothing. (Nothing meaning both "no obvious reaction from the terminal" and Wicd nor Network Manager did not pick up the house wi-fi any better than before)

I suggest to have a backup with timeshift or clone backup before you go to next step.
The next step is to download and install the non free firmware of Debian 9 which is compatible with Mint 18.3.

After download,
Reboot and check.
