Network Manager Problem, 802.1x Supplicant Failure (SOLVED)

I am using a Dell Inspiron 11 3179 with dual boot Linux and windows. The school network is a guest network that requires a sign-in, which works when I first get to school. However, when I put Linux into suspend(sleep mode) and turn it back on, then Linux has a connectivity issue, it says that there is an 802.1x supplicant failure. I've tried using wicd and it showed the specific channels and broke it more (I have since removed it). I'm puzzled because it works and then stops working, it will not allow me to connect to any network without switching back to windows or restarting. The wireless driver is Atheros as well, which from my research works well usually. My computer also uses an SSD rather than a hard drive (usually they have HDD). I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 version 3.6.7 and kernel 4.10.0-38-generic, I had to revert to the older kernel due to a mouse bug.

Now it is occurring upon restart and suspend, I now restart the network manager to "fix" the problem temporarily, but what is causing it and what can fix it?

It is no longer a guest network problem, now it's happening whenever it comes out of suspend mode on any network. RIP

Now, Linux denies to connect to the school network and crashes when I try to restart the network manager. What is going on?!?!?!?

Linux is being temperamental at this point, it is working right now, but not sure if it's fixed or not. I haven't tried anything, what can cause this problem is my question. (restarting the network manager fixes it temporarily).

This seems to only occur on some guest networks that require a portal to log into the network. CORRECTION: It does occur on normal networks but more seldom. Very strange...

The problem is still occurring, but now I avoid it by using Windows while at school or on a guest network. Does this not happen to anyone else? Guest networks are pretty popular and people who use them have to notice this problem.

I will be updating my wireless card in a couple of months and I can not go to a newer kernel due to a cursor jump problem. Maybe the wireless card could cause it, but this is not the reason I am changing the card, I have other reasons...

I am using an ASUS TP500L LM 18.3 Cinnamon laptop which has a MediaTek WiFi adapter in it.
It is constantly dropping out, and then reconnecting after a long delay period.
never have figured out what is wrong.

My WiFi router/ISP/Modem is supplied by AT&T and is the latest model available, rock solid for my new ACER Win10 laptop, never, ever, drops out.

On the ASUS the "solution" is to turn off the internal MediaTek adapter and use an external USB adapter, in my case a Panda PAU06 which seems to be nearly rock solid. It has only dropped out once in two days.

WiFi signals take a lot of bounces around any environment, so signal cancellation is not an unheard of thing.

I got a dell (qualcomm) 1707 b/g/n currently. Since I dual boot, Windows 10 works perfectly fine on the internet, full signal strength wherever, but only on Linux and on a guest network does it almost randomly stops working completely (the network manager). I can not even see other networks in the area.

I can surely feel for you, the MediaTek adapter in my laptop does NOT like to use motel WiFi signals at all.

My assumption here, is because there are so many of their WiFi routers, all broadcasting on the same channel, the signals are interferring with each other. a good IT tech would force each of the WiFi routers to use a different channel, but still, with so many crammed into a small location, the coChannel interference is really bad.

The Panda PAU06 handles this situation much better than the MediaTek does.

You might try getting an external USB WiFi adapter, I would think that you would need a better one than I am using, which is single band at $14.95

That does not explain completely what I have experienced, I go to church and they have a guest network, on a single router with no other internet access points in the building and it still occurs there.

I have refined the problem to either a software compatibility problem or the network manager not functioning correctly. When the computer is closed (sleep) and woken back up, the network manager stops working completely and states "802.1x Supplicant Failure" and stops listing any network connections available, as well as, does not state anything about network connections available, it leaves it blank. The wireless card is a Dell (Qualcomm) card which I can see causing problems.

I have pretty much confirmed that my problem is a hardware compatibility problem. Since the wireless card is made by Qualcomm, they do not support Linux due to not releasing the code for the card itself (same as card details). I am 90% sure that a new wireless card and specifically the one I am getting will fix the problem. I will keep this open until I get the card and make sure that it is the issue.

Hi, did you consider to buy a dongle?. It will save time and money, until the problem could be fixed in the future. Meanwhile you can ask for support to the product manufacturer, which are the bad guys.

that is a grossly misinformed support tech.

Dell is one of the major suppliers of products that have Linux preinstalled at time of sale.

CompuLabs in Israel is a major supplier of Fanless computers that have Linux Mint's logo on the case.

I have upgraded to Linux Mint 19 Tara and the compatibility problem appears to be no more.
