rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Hello,
i have a tablet device (win 10, cube i9) that i would like to install linux mint 18.1(or any mint 2017/18). I can happily install mint, but it wont play nicely(actually at all) with the rtl8723bu realtek wifi thats built into the tablet. There is larry fingers driver but i think that is not for modern versions of linux mint/ubuntu...and anyhow i didnt really get it to work properly.
Can anyone point me out the error of my ways and help with the installation of the driver(s) or am i stuck with win 10 ?
Many thanks,
steve.

Thanks for the reply,
Any idea how I would do that please as I thought Larry fingers driver was for a lower down version of mint/ubuntu ?
Thanks

Should work, if you have issues just post them

Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Dunno about that, just that I used a similar method for a realtek 8192cu and the same code worked for a bunch of kernels.
In case you need it, here's where I learned to undo the custom driver (the last post, I'm going to update my answer at the top)

Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
hello,
i have tried the site you suggested but when i look at network manager after a reboot there is no network. When i put a wifi dongle back in(ironically its a realtek chip lol) i can happily connect and it scans and sees all of the local wifi in the area. One strange thing is that sometimes, in network manager the built in wifi will see all local wifi signals and i can connect...and the signal is much better through it. but after a reboot it goes, and wont come back...as of yet.
not sure what to do next tbh...any ideas ?
Thanks,
steve.

Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Wait few seconds and check if after the command you have wifi. If not install the 4.4 lts kernel and check again. If it works you have to black list permanently at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe -r rtl8xxxu
Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Do a
sudo update-usbids
and post results for Code: Select all

The sudo modprobe did not work btw , but thanks anyhow.
Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Greetings!
By now, i had hoped you'd get a constructive reply from someone here -- anyone ... It looks like your problem is related to (possibly the same as) mine which i had posted here @ viewtopic.php?f=53&t=267069&p=1453204#p1453204 Fyi, here's the ebay-picture of my dongle: . The only way i got this dongle working, about a year ago, was to follow the directions posted @ https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... /reserve-7 (possibly authored by one of this forum's members, "pjotr").
That RTL8192EU driver worked perfectly up to and including the 4.4.0-112 kernel. I did not realize this until it was too late, a system reboot after 3 subsequent kernel updates (powered via a UPS, my system usually just gets suspended). All attempts to reinstall that driver on the subsequent kernels (> 4.4.0-112) failed, and those newer kernel's default driver, RTL8xxxu, proved unworkable 95% of the time thus is worthless imho.
Because my post received no replies, and absent any other helpful posts, i went back to the 4.4.0-112 kernel. I've now pinned that kernel and will stay with it until i learn more ... Good luck!

Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
Are you sure the internal is not the rtl8723au as Pjotr's site shows that the bu and au use the same ID?
Re: rtl8723bu driver for mint 2018
No its a bu,
In the first listing it does show about half way down... Network card not found.. Not sure if that's relevant?
