Mint removed plugin now no wifi

Post by dneloso » Sat Apr 07, 2018 3:29 pm

I started my computer Tuesday and got a popup saying a plugin had tried
to start to many times and mint would remove it. I stupidly hit OK so then
I had no network and any program that used WiFi would not launch. Synaptic,
Browsers, updater or anything else that uses WiFi . I have no idea what was
Removed or how to get it back. I have an HP amd 64 desktop with mint 18 64
latest updates this is the first problem I have had with mint and I really do not
want to go back to windows. I am 79 and would be very thankful for any help
you can give me. David Nelson

Sorry I cannot figure out how run this script on my mint.
I got it downloaded on another computer and copied it
to my desktop with a flash drive but there is no option
To make executable or run it. I should have mentioned
I am using xfce desktop if that makes any difference. I
am doing this on a cheap Chinese tablet and it is a pain.
Hopefully you may be able to tell what I am doing wrong.
I am very grateful for your time. Thank you. David

If it is on your desktop, in terminal do

Code: Select all

cd Desktop
chmod +x ./wireless-info
./wireless-info
Then copy the wireless-info.txt[/] file back to the computer with internet

That was in you original instructions, kinda glommed into downloading it....but I think people tend to miss the steps when you have "&&" and "\" rather than three separate lines for
"get it",
"make it executable",
"run it"

Cool script, tho, thanks!

Sorry but I keep getting on ./wireless-info permission denied.
On sudo ./wireless-info I get command not found. When I did
Sudo chmod +X ./wireless-info it returned nothing. No errors so I
assumed it worked but when I right click the file and look at
permissions it is still only rw. I do not know what I am doing wrong.
Looks to simple to mess up. Thanks David

Delete it and try copying it again, if you put it in home or Desktop, don't use sudo for any commands. Try putting it in home directory and then the chmod +x ./wireless-info then ./wireless-info

OK deleted and copied to home dir. chmod +X ./wireless-info
./wireless-info : no such file or directory
The file is named wireless-info.text if that makes a difference.
Thanks David

This code from JeremyB works for me:
In a Terminal:
wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireles ... eless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info

That's ALL one line.
Output is in /home/username/ (whatever your username may be).
Good luck.

Figured how to run script. Had to change .txt to .sh. Did that and could make executable in permissions.
Ran script and posted results on pastebin. The url is: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/pM7RM8g63q/
wicd is connected to internet but none of my browers or any program that uses the internet will launch.
Click on a program, curser spins a second then nothing. Hope you can help. mint removed something
and I have no idea what. A plugin but it did not say which one. Thanks David

Turns out an update caused the problem. Removed virtualbox-guest and all is well.
Thanks to everyone who looked at or commented on my post. David
