No Internet connection. Wi-fi Asus USB-N13

Post by korzhikm » Sun Apr 22, 2018 8:55 am

I set up network connection through "Network Manager" that is built by default in Linux mint Cinnamon 18.3. Connection settings are following: IPv6 completely turned off (Method: ignore). IPv4 Method:manual; Address: 192.168.1.250; Netmask: 250.250.250.0; Gateway 192.168.1.1; DNS servers 8.8.8 (I do not understand where the program saves these settings. Nothing has changed in the file "interfaces" which is located at "/etc/network/interfaces".) IP-address of the router is determined by the command "ip route show". Asus RTN-10U works as router. Wi-Fi usb whistle is Asus N13. Here is the data of lsusb (0b05:17ab ASUSTek Computer, Inc. USB-N13 802.11 n Network Adapter (Rev. (B1) [Realtek rtl8192cu]).
Network connection is established and works correctly for about 5 minutes but then it disappears. I. e. the network Manager claims that the network is established and connection is good, but Firefox cannot find the connection. I checked connection to the router with the command Ping 192.168.1.1. and found out that there was no connection. So I turned off the network and turned it on via Network Manager and immediately begin testing connection by the command Ping 192.168.1.1. I surfed in Internet for about 15 minutes without any problems. The network connection was stable. There is an assumption that Linux at some point thinks that the device is idle and disconnects the network, if I do not spam ping command. How can it be adjusted or there is no solution and I have to spam ping command?

Try the following in terminal

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf && systemctl restart network-manager.service
That should disable wifi power management

No, it is not working.
After 7 minutes left I have the following respond from wi-fi router:

PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.250 icmp_seq=12 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.250 icmp_seq=13 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.250 icmp_seq=14 Destination Host Unreachable

At least we add 2 minutes until it shuts down :)

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist rtl8192cu" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8192cu.conf
Reboot, see if it works better with the rtl8xxxu module by itself

Thank you very much. It's alive, alive...
Can you explain what we have done exactly? I need to explain other Linux users in my country who faced with the same problem. I suppose that we switched smth off, but why...?

This only happens to a few wifi devices. It was actually using multiple kernel modules, one set was rtl8192cu with its dependencies and the other was rtl8xxxu. The rtl8192cu actually showed some errors in your script report, so we blacklisted it to keep it from loading

Excuse me for my questions, I am a Newbie in Linux. Kernel module is something like driver in Windows? I suppose if we switched it down, what happens with other devices such as scanner, printer or any other?

Kernel modules are the same as drivers in Windows, shutting the one down only affects the wifi
