[SOLVED-Abandoned] Wireless Epson XP-640 not waking and print jobs stuck

Post by JerryF »

Hi all,

After a few months of having this Epson printer, I feel that I'm at less than 100% at making the printer work properly with Mint. The reason: Our Gateway desktop and HP Laptop (both 18.3 Cinnamon) won't print when jobs are sent. This has been since day one of getting this printer and connecting it wirelessly to our Netis WF2419 router.

When I or my partner try to print anything from any program, the print job hangs in the print queue. We make sure the printer isn't in sleep mode before printing.

I can sometimes get it to print by first pinging the static IP address of the printer, which usually shows unreachable first few lines, then packets are sent. After pinging, the job will usually print.

I'm at my wits end. Two of our Android tablets have no problem waking the printer and printing.

I know there can be numerous reasons why this is happening. Router, firewall, etc. I can give any and all information of the devices on the network. I just don't know where to start.

Re: Wireless Epson XP-640 not waking and print jobs stuck

Post by pdc_2 »

sorry to hear of the problems

Ubuntu have a guide on debugging printing problems https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

they do suggest https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrinti ... _error_log or comment "So if your problem was a failed print job, the error_log can already contain the desired information. Unfortunately, only 200 debug message lines get logged per failed job. Run the command

Code: Select all

cupsctl LogDebugHistory=999999
for practically unlimited logging of failed jobs."

____________

one could download the free version of Turboprint as it supports your printer; and just see if will print; it supports your very excellent 640 http://www.turboprint.info/printer_Epso ... eries.html

,,,,,,,, actually I see they say
Test TurboPrint for 30 days without limitations
so that is pretty helpful

_____________

Epson updated the generic driver they supply; on 2nd April 2018; so you could try deleting the existing icon; and updating the driver and doing a new install and evaluate that

http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02 ... e43b62db49 looks like you would need the epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.20-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb

____________

your 640 is airprint-compatible; Ubuntu introduced that in 17.04 so our first view in Mint will be Mint 19; in maybe July? sounds like it is autoconfigured as "driverless" so interesting how that performs too

Jerry,

I don't have an Epson printer, but my HP does do a similar thing. The PC isn't getting the subscription properly renewed. You can check this by typing: http://localhost:631/admin/log/access_log?(presuming this works with any printer/CUPS setup) in a web browser page-- it will ask for your user ID and password. You will see logging similar to one of the lines below if that happens to be your issue:

Code: Select all

localhost - root [25/Apr/2018:07:44:26 -0500] "POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 200 211 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer client-error-bad-request
localhost - - [25/Apr/2018:07:45:34 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 183 Renew-Subscription client-error-not-foundt
If this is happening for me, I then go to Admin, Printers, and right-click, select Properties, and click on the Change button for URI, and re-select the appropriate path once it populates.

Then, in the browser, hit F5 to refresh the page, and you should see a line added as below (if it worked) confirming subscription has been renewed:

Code: Select all

localhost - root [25/Apr/2018:07:46:26 -0500] "POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 200 399 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer successful-ok
Just something you can check to see if your issue is similar, since you stated on occasion you are able to print by pinging. (I'm guessing that maybe your ping renews the subscription.) We don't print that often, so we just do this as needed.

Eric, thanks for your reply. I will check to see if I get similar results with those commands.

I'm hoping that I can find a permanent fix to this problem because my partner won't/doesn't want to be changing properties, etc.

Hi pcd_2,

I do appreciate the TurboPrint reference, but I'd prefer to try to solve this without closed-source programs.

I have installed the latest Epson driver epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.20-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb

I went to the links you provided and followed their instructions.

I can open the CUPS web interface at http://127.0.0.1:631/

In my /var/log/cups/error_log, I have two lines that start with E (which I assume is Error):

Code: Select all

E [25/Apr/2018:16:49:51 -0400] [Job 52] Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details.
...
E [25/Apr/2018:16:50:08 -0400] [cups-deviced] PID 15330 (gutenprint52+usb) stopped with status 1!
Is the error log helpful to you? I get pop ups saying that there's a filter error, but haven't a clue what these "filters" mean.

Hi Eric,

I checked http://localhost:631/admin/log/access_log? and I don't get any logging similar to yours. I performed a find "client-error" to see if I could find either line like yours, but no hits.

Code: Select all

localhost - root [25/Apr/2018:07:44:26 -0500] "POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 200 211 CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer client-error-bad-request

thanks Jerry: the turboprint suggestion was just to try it and see if it was any better; not really a permanent;
gutenprint52+usb
that suggests to me the driver being used is gutenprint rather than the epson driver; I wonder how many icons there are for the 640 in the PRINTERS folder; and if one right-clicks on the icon, what MAKE & MODEL says?

The other error message
Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details.
leads all around the place; curiously one Arch post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148850 mentioned that
the file system was full (/var/spool/cups) and the cups daemon couldn't create files on it. Cleaning the pacman cache which was on the same file system solved the issue.
so errors can come from all sorts of places; I will read more!

I installed TurboPrint and installed the printer. It prints a test page.

I've only had one printer installed and showing before installing the TurboPrint printer.
The printer on the left is the one that has been installed all this time.

There seems to be enough free space in /var/spool/cups:

TurboPrint prints each and every time.

With a usual install of the printer, CUPS still giving me filter failed.

Epson XP-640 turboprint prints but not CUPS

Post by pdc_2 »

at least Turboprint is working each time; I wonder what

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
gives; it sometimes reveals missing packages from cups

________
in our system, CUPS http://localhost:631/admin has the option to access error log; I wondered if that gave you feedback when you attempt to print with the Epson driver; we have to enter root as the username; and then my system password; you can edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf so instead of saying
Require user @SYSTEM
one deletes that reference so it is open access

I can access CUPS http://localhost:631/admin (not as root for username, but my username and my password).

In /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, I removed all lines saying 'Require user @SYSTEM', saved the file and rebooted. Still having same problem---Filter failed.

Yes, I can access the error log. Here's the result immediately after printing, then cancelling the job:

Re: Wireless Epson XP-640 not waking and print jobs stuck

Post by JerryF »

Things I've been trying:

I've tried printing from yet another laptop---a Dell. Same results---Filter failed.

I've also tried running a Live session of Mint. Still no good.

I tried a DVD that I have of Linux Lite 3.0. I ran that, installed the Epson Driver 1.6.20 and printed. It did. :)

Opened my Windows 10 in Oracle VM and printed from there. It did. :)

so the Ubuntu wiki says: data goes to cups; then data goes to printer from cups;

so they say how to get what is sent to cups; https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrinti ... t_job_data and then what goes from cups to printer
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrinti ... he_printer

the wiki spells out each step but it is whether one feels like wading through it all; I see Linux Lite is based on Debian/Ubuntu and you say it works fine

I would be curious if you felt able to download a lightweight version of Ubuntu 18.04 and see if it is ok

It is no consolation now; but Mint 19 will have the airprint-compatible option; and the xp-640 is airprint compatible; so it should auto-configure and offer "driverless xp-640" as another option;

Again, thanks pcd_2,

Although I don't like swimming in water, I do like swimming through information

I will go through those links.

I can and will download a lightweight version of Ubuntu 18.04 and check printing from there.

Yes, airprint is an good option. I'll also check that when I upgrade from 18.3 to 19

As I write this, I just finished taking apart some of the printhead components. I had a big leakage of the black (for text) cartridge. Because of this, the printer was also balking that the cartridge(s) were not installed correctly. Ink was in the contacts and many other crevices. I cleaned out as much as I could without taking apart the whole assembly.

Here's what I have out and drying:

When I reassemble (if things go well), I'll try all of your suggestions!

Re: [SOLVED-Abandoned] Wireless Epson XP-640 not waking and print jobs stuck

Well, things didn't go well. I reassembled what I cleaned up and installed. After installing cartridges, I now get an error code 033001, which is nowhere to be found on Epson.com.

I'm fed up with this All-in-one and will be getting rid of it. It's only 16 months old and I've only used Epson ink cartridges from the Epson Store. I'll be getting a printer that just prints---no scanning, copies, making coffee!

I've had such bad luck with printers for the past 3 years. The Canon printer (not all-in-one) stopped printing and was still under extended warranty. Print head was defective. Was replaced with new printer. That one also died. Got a refund.

Unfortunately, this one is beyond warranty.

Thanks to all who helped. I really do appreciate it.
