No internet, despite WFi connecting, new Mint SOLVED

Hi.
This my first post and my first day with Linux... not a good day. I tried Mint from a usb memory stick and all seemed okay. Now, when I have installed it properly (18.3, Cinnamon, 64 bit), it will not connect to the Internet. I've read other posts about this, but I don't have a problem connecting to WiFi or ethernet it's just that Mint will not connect to the Internet.
I'd appreciate any help - you know how frustrating this sort of thing can be. I've said goodbye to Windows and really want to start learning Linux, but this isn't a happy start.
By the way, my Internet connection is fine - I'm doing this after all - as my Chromebook and 'phone have no trouble.

UPDATE
Mystery! My new Mint system will connect to the internet via my mobile 'phone hotspot, but not via my home wifi. I used this to update the kernel and whatever the driver manager wanted to do, but it still won't connect via my home wifi.

Hi Paul, I am no expert in things Linux, being a relative newbie, too. I'm wondering if the firewall is turned on and blocking your internet traffic. There is a menu option to to turn it on or off. It can be done quite quickly from terminal, but I can't remember the command.

It has ufw installed by default, if you want a GUI to use, install Gufw !

man ufw in the terminal will give some good info. ufw enable will start it with default settings.

4. Firewall

Although I haven’t had any problems using Linux Mint 18 without the firewall, I suggest you turn it on. Better safe than sorry right?

Open Firewall configuration from the menu and just flick the off switch to on. The default configuration should be good to go.

Thank you to everyone for trying to help me - I need it!

I went to the Community Centre where I volunteer, working amongst other things to solve peoples' computer problems... pretty funny in a way. Anyway, my newly Minted laptop connected to the internet okay and I let it install all the updates it wanted to. I was then able to install Chromium which I want to use to drive my ancient printer from my Chromebook via my laptop.

I came home and once again I couldn't connect to the Internet... except... Firefox couldn't but Chromium could and Software Manager could. Previously nothing on the laptop could connect to the 'net. I think my problem is solved, but I don't really know why. I guess I'll try reinstalling firefox.

I reinstalled firefox and it still won't connect.

Once again, thank you for trying to help me. If I can solve the problem of why firefox won't connect when everything else will I'll let you know what it was.

Now, about 15 minutes later, it's all working. The only thing I did was remove Yahoo and the other default search engines and use google. Could be a coincidence...

I can get on with my life again now.

you had one of the "ReDirect" varmints...

first thing I do with Firefox installs, delete all of the other search engines, go to "other Search Engines" way down at the bottom of the page, find the Google logo, and click on that, and then click on "Make it my Default Search Engine".

Job 1 done.

I will Donate $$$ direct to the Mint folks, they don't need no stinking advert $ from me.

I feel like I'm taking up too much space here but I want to be complete in case anybody else has this problem.

Later in the day neither update manager nor firefox could connect to the 'net. Then they could. I suspect that it's my poor internet connection (rural Australia, satellite connection) and sometimes it's just not good enough for Mint.

But ... Windows never had a problem; Chrome never has a problem even on Mint; my Chromebook and three different Android devices never have a problem. By the way, when I was trying to connect Mint at first, I didn't have anything else connected.

If anything, maybe I need to reset things like timeout defaults and the number of times it'll try again. I'll get to that eventually but for now I'll just use Chrome/Chromium.
