Re: "Wi-Fi Network Authentication" keeps popping up

Post by wind_rose_2 »

I am thinking we may be barking up the wrong tree. I also have an earlier lenovo Yoga, mind you not with the same config. But of the 7 out of 8 computers l have this is the only one having the issue. I had started another discussion on LM Forums for the issue l have (sorry l had not mentioned it prior) with my display screen flickering. Now this only occurs when online and when l have the Wi Fi off the Lenovo 2 Pro is like a rock! It will play DVD's perfectly and perform any other apps but the issue gets bad while connected to Wi Fi. So , and l am not the expert here, l am thinking it may be the network card. Researching on Youtube (ya, l know) there are a few people that have experienced similar issues and have corrected them with the card replacement , there was some issue with a newer Bios that l didn't fully grasp, so an opinion (expert) would be appreciated.
I was also thinking that possibly LM 18.3 may have been the issue and that loading with Mate may correct the issue but l am really leaning towards the network card..??

I'm not an expert on this, but one way to find out if it's the wireless card would be to buy or borrow a cheap usb wifi stick known to work with linux and see if the problems still exist.

Also don't remember had you update from 17.x ? if so it could be a kernel issue also. good luck.

I'd leave it open for now as it has not been totally solved yet. :)

I am sitting on top of the router so l am going to be the strongest signal so l do not think a change of channel is the solution. I have just loaded up the Mate Distro to see if Cinnamon was the issue and the Network Box is still popping up so that is not the issue. I have ordered a USB WiFi adapter and expect that in the next few days to try that route.

this one is something that I've also noticed,
and from my experience, there is a few things involved here:
- the main item, being that LinuxMint is often being installed onto older PCs.
and it's my general assumption, that the WiFi card is starting to fail,,
initially just on the odd occasion, then gradually it's more often,, until the WiFi no longer works.

the best solution, is to obtain & use an external usb wifi stick, as a replacement.
- the same issue is sometimes seen also on Windows Systems as well,
and most folks will go down the driver re-installation route, as that initially seems to work.
but later on, the WiFi fails more often & then finally stops working altogether.

Thanks Pierre, I have ordered the USB wifi stick to try and am hopeful it may solve the issue.
However this laptop, Lenovo 2 Pro, though an older model was brand new 6 months ago. Have you ever changed the Wifi card in one of these? If l have to do so l may need some help with the bios setting as l have read there may be issues but have seen nothing specific.
I am wondering about replacement under warranty but am not certain if they would cover it seeing as l have changed the original configuration from Win 10.

No Dave,, I've never even tried to replace any Wifi card, as most, if not all of them,
were inbuilt into the Laptop, and the odd few that were part of some desktop, were always an add-in card.
- and yes - - they do seem to work better.

as far as Replacement under Warranty goes - - I've always suggested, that if there is even the remotest chance
of chasing some Warranty on your New Machine - - then you should swap out the HDD for another < new > HDD,,
and install your New Linux System(s) onto that new HDD:
- whilst keeping the Original HDD in an static bag, in the drawer that's under your Table,
so, in the unlikely event of needing some Warranty, for whatever reason, you just swap back in, that old HDD

If you determine that it is indeed the wifi card this you-tube video is quite good in showing how to replace it on the Lenovo pro 2.

in order to test the current WiFi connection,
you copy & paste those commands into the Terminal of your running LinuxMint system,,
& copy the result back into your next reply.

Yes I have seen this video..excellent! However the card he is using to replace the old one is the same card l now have installed. So l would hope that my card has failed and this video is an excellent guide on doing the swap. Funny though he has the orange coloured version 2, and l have a first generation Yoga the same colour, but my new(er) 2 Pro is gray.
Thanks again!

I don't want to jinx it but it has been an hour and l haven't had to reconnect to the internet!! l have just disabled my VPN and the Blutooth so now l will put one on and try it then the other then both and see which combination triggered the issue. Then once l find out what caused it l will have to figure out why??? Something must have been altered as l have been using both on a regular basis and never encountered the problem before. One thing for sure..it wasn't the distro!
Thanks one and all who have shown a great deal of patience with this nuby!

Please do a

Code: Select all

sudo rm wireless-info
And run the commands in the wireless script link without using sudo as it messed up the permissions and caused the commands to fail

disable the UFW and change the encryption on the wifi router to WPA2 only without WEP or TKIP

The UFW is blocking a lot of traffic between your computer and the router

Thanks for all this Jeremy, I have a TP-LINK router WR1043ND and it only offers the WPA-WPA2 option as WPA PSK ,WPA2 PSK or the Automatic setting which l have selected for Version and for security it again has an Automatic (Selected) or TKIP or AES. So l think l am good with that.
The disarming of the firewall UFW l think must be done with the Terminal and l am reading up on that on Digitaloceans website.
I had mentioned above that l had turned OFF my VPN and Bluetooth and the problem has been resolved. Not once has the internet signal been lost this evening. I turned the blutooth back on and no issues for an hr or so then l tried the VPN with Blutooth off and it worked fine for 5 hrs now. Possibly the switching off and on of the VPN reset itself?? IDK but it seems to be fine now.
I will let it stand in this configuration with the UWF in place for another day and if all is well will mark the task as resolved.
Thanking again you and all who have assisted.

The WPA2-PSK with AES would be the preferred router settings. Using TKIP security is like putting a screen door on a bank vault
Locked
