[Solved] iwlwifi deleted from kernel 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64?

Post by hrmcrm »

I tested kernel 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64 and had no wifi. It's OK in kernel 4.15.0-15-generic x86_64.
With 14.15.0-15:

Also with 14.15.0-20

Code: Select all

howard@X201LM183KDE64 ~ $ modprobe iwlwifi
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:832 kmod_module_insert_module() could not find module by name='iwlwifi'
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'iwlwifi': Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

So is iwlwifi gone for good, or is this a bug that needs reporting?
Thanks,

No, iwlwifi is not gone. There is some bug with the changes Ubuntu made with the 4.15.0-20 kernel. I suggest using the LTS 4.4 kernel or the 4.13 kernel that will be supported until August until this issue is sorted
or you could try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
Reboot

Always interested in learning something new, while running 14.15.0-15 I did

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-20-generic
rebooted into 14.15.0-20, and voilà, wifi.

I do run the LTS 4.4 kernel quite a bit. It works flawlessly.

Thanks, Jeremy.
