18.3: Connected to network but no data transmission

Post by zaftom »

Hi all. I recently did a clean install of Mint 18.3 on a brand new hard drive. I'm having trouble maintaining data transmission on any wifi network unless the connection is extremely strong (e.g. being within a couple feet of the router). I will still be connected to a network, but will get tons of DNS errors and iwconfig shows ever-climbing numbers of Tx excessive retries, sometimes within seconds of connecting. This happens with every wifi network--home, work, public, etc. I've permanently disabled power management and my drivers are up-to-date.

I previously used the same machine with Mint and didn't have any of these issues, so I'm pretty sure it's a software thing. I've posted the outputs of some relevant commands below (inxi -Fxz and iwconfig when the network is connected but not transmitting data). The output of the UbuntuForums wireless-info.txt command is here: http://termbin.com/w64b. Any help is greatly appreciated!

internal wifi on a laptop? Those are often weak and fail a lot. Try a USB wifi device like this one from Panda, see if problem goes away. It works "out of the box" with linux.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I agree with that, my ASUS internal WiFi will not stay connected, keeps dropping out, and taking too long to reconnect.

Installed a Panda PAU06 USB WiFi and it never drops.
