Slow wifi after installing Linux Mint

Hey guys,

I've got a Toshiba Satellite C-50A with a Realtek RTL8188EE that I recently installed Mint 18 onto. When this laptop has Windows before, it was getting about 50mbps over our 2.4G network. After installing Mint, it would get about the same, but after about 10 minutes would go down to about 2-3mbps, and this wouldn't change until rebooting the computer. I tried another device in the same area on the same network, and it was running adequately at 50mbps.

I looked online for some suggestions and installed this github driver via:

cd rtlwifi_new
make
sudo modprobe -rv rtl8188ee
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -v rtl8188ee

But no dice after that Kernel is up to date, and every other device in my house is peachy in the same area. Since this is sort of a known issue I'm wondering if maybe a USB wifi dongle is the answer. I'm running on a Ubuntu live USB right now to see if the speeds are affected in the same way but I assume they will be, being a similar build.

Any ideas with this? I'm super stumped.
