Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
Can you connect to ethernet? If so see the wireless script link in my signature and post results.
The RTL8168 is actually an ethernet device, not wifi

Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
I think the first issue is to get you on a supported kernel with the latest security updates. Go into the Update Manager, click View/Linux kernels, select 4.4 on the left and find the highest numbered version on the right side, choose install. After that is done, reboot, hold Shift key or ESC depending on install until Grub Menu appears, choose Advanced Options and scroll down to the first 4.4 kernel entry and press enter. Once booted into 4.4, if everything except wifi is ok, then use the Update Manager view/linux kernels, click on 4.8 and remove the old 4.8 kernel.
If 4.4 doesn't work correctly, install 4.15.0-23 and reboot, it should boot into 4.15.0-23 by default.
After finding a kernel that supports the other hardware, I think 4.4 would then in terminal do
If this computer is EFI, then go into BIOS/UEFI settings after reboot and disable Secure Boot, it should work fine then

Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
Thank you Jeremy! Can this be done with a live bootable USB? I meant, I have a booteable for mate 18.3 . Thus I can skip the upgrading kernel step?
I was planning to make a fresh install because this is my old disk and is a kind of a mess.
I was planning to make a fresh install because this is my old disk and is a kind of a mess.
Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
It can't be done in Live USB as the process needs a reboot. I would try installing LM 18(original) or LM 19. If Linux Mint 19 works for you, I would use it
After a reboot into the installed version run before the commands in posting.php?mode=reply&f=53&t=272876#pr1492981
After a reboot into the installed version run
Code: Select all
sudo apt update
Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
YEEEEEEEEESSSS JEREMY!! It worked . I followed the changing to the 4.4 kernel way. Now that I know that the problem has a solution, I want to upgrade to mint 18.3 (I would say 19 but read several people having trouble ). Let me know if I understood this: After the install, run
Then fallow the same steps. It this right?
Thank you so much for your help! It was priceless to me!

Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
I think it will not be an issue updating to LM 18.3 and wifi should work after you reboot
Re: Lenovo E480 with realtek RTL8168 /8111 cant connect to wifi :(
Jeremy I now confirm it: I was able to make a fresh install of mint 18.3 and fallowing the steps finally worked!! Bravo clap clap clap
