SOLVED - How to create a LAN through a router, with a GUI ?

Post by MintyMorkyMindy » Wed Jul 18, 2018 8:04 pm

Hi,

Both machines run LM19.

One machine is connected to the router via a cable and the other via wireless.

I want to create a single shared folder with these machines.

I have Samba installed but don't know how to use it.

I need GUI software to assist me. It doesn't need to be Samba.

What are my options to achieve the above?

Thanks.

:)

If the router is giving each machine an IP address that are in the same range (Eg: 192.168.1.5 and 192.168.1.50) Then use your File Manager on each machine to share a folder (iirc it's in the pop-up context menu when you right-click on the folder you want to share). Once done sharing, you should be able to see each other's shared folder through the Network link in each File Manager. :)

Select the folder you want to share. Right click on it and select sharing options, turn that on and select the appropriate check boxes. All being well, that may be all you need.

Thank you, I got it working.

:)

For those wanting to achieve similar. NOT a comprehensive tutorial.

1. Install Samba on both computers (networking a folder between two computers)
2. After installing Samba, reboot.
3. Fix Samba not installing on LM19
sudo touch /etc/libuser.conf
sudo -H system-config-samba
4. To open Samba GUI use the above, eg:
sudo -H system-config-samba

* You need to set folder permissions for share, Nemo.
* You need to use Samba to set the password.
* Samba does NOT work properly in LM19, no menu entries.

Not too sure about that. I used samba to network all my machines with no issues. There are no menu entries for Samba.
