Cinnamon 19 No wireless after installation - LIve works great

Post by vreten »

My harddrive failed on my old Alienware mx11 which was running Mint KDE 18.1 great. Taking the opportunity to upgrade I ran the 19 live and wireless worked great. But once I installed it now shows "unavailable" and no ssid's are found.

Hopping to get some tips on things to try.

This is for Centrino Wireless-N 1000.

I ran the script and uploaded, http://termbin.com/cs3hb
The script output is also available below.

Thanks!

I can see part of the problem but I don't know why, post results for

Code: Select all

Ok, the plot just deepened. When I reboot the computer I don't see any networks. But I randomly turned off the computer totally, then started up and then I can see the networks just fine and connect.

Here the output with it working (ssid's found). Should it help if I rebooted (no ssid's found) and ran the command again?

It might be Network Manager trying to enable wifi power management that is causing the issue

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf && systemctl restart network-manager.service
Will keep Network Manager from being able to enable power management

While wifi was working I ran the

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf && systemctl restart network-manager.service
and rebooted to test it out. But after the reboot it came back with Network Unavailable and no SSID.

Since it wasn't working I reran

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep iwl
and got some very interesting and different output than before including "Could not load the [0] uCode section", " Failed to load firmware chunk! and "iwlwifi transaction failed, dumping registers".

Code: Select all

I then reran

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf && systemctl restart network-manager.service
to see if that might make a difference and while it did reload the network manager it was did not fix wireless. Turning the computer off and then back on does though.

Why would doing a cold boot be different than a restart?

In thinking about this a bit more, I said the live image worked fine but I can't say I tested a reboot. Each shutdown and startup I did a cold boot. It's quite possible that it would be the same symptom.

on the Live Environment - it most likely is the same issue,
as there is with the installed system.

ie: Network Manager is still being able to enable power management .. ..

Interesting that power management is related to this. What are you thoughts on the error message Failed to load firmware chunk!? I've never upgraded firmware on this machine before.
