Wifi adapter needs to be unplugged everytime i boot

hello, i have a TP-Link W821n V5 wireless adapter connected to my desktop.
i have installed the rtlwifi driver from here https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... /reserve-7
which solved the problem of not connecting at all,
but the thing is that everytime i boot the computer, the connection fails, where dmesg says authentication timed out.
i unplug the device and put it back in, and it works.
i suspect there must be a better way.. but too unfamiliar with troubleshooting this kind of issue..

You'll need to run these commands when the card is active. I don't see your WiFi card in either of these output files. We need both to see what changes are being made when the card fails.

hello, in the first post i ran these commands while the wifi was connected,
i did the same when it was not, the results of inxi -Fzx were pretty much identical, the only differences were the cpu clock speed information,
the sensors temperature info, and the processes count..

when ran iwconfig it was this:

I'm not sure why it fails from those logs alone but my guess is the driver isn't waiting for the hardware to be fully initialized and thus it doesn't set the device up correctly the first time it gets loaded. I don't feel like debugging and fixing the driver sources though, so let's stick with the above workaround.

Before we can make that permanent I need to know whether we'll only need to fix it at boot or whether it also breaks at resume from a suspend or hibernate (when it was working before entering sleep). Let me know.

i have tried to go into suspend mode to check, but the computer did not return, after a quick google search, i pressed the power button - which gave me the
login screen, but after that there was a strange screen with pink vertical lines, so ctrl+alt+delete brought me back to login screen, where i rebooted.

apart from that - whenever i don't use the computer for a certain amount of time, the screen shuts down, (i don't turn it off, even when i go to sleep)
and when i move the mouse, it comes back and everything is working as before. (not sure if this is "sleep mode")
anyway, i don't seem to be able to use suspend mode (and don't think i need it anyway)..

Ok, so with your suspend broken let's leave that for another thread I guess, should you care (seems you never used it before, anyway). So to permanently apply the workaround for the wifi adapter, this should do the job:

sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.local

PS: This overwrites an existing /etc/rc.local file - don't use should you have created one yourself already, just append the workaround to the existing file then.

yes, this seems to do trick!, altough it didn't work the first time around, i read on other thread about using the sleep command in order to delay the execution
of the script, and that worked.

Oh interesting, I didn't expect that by the time that file gets run it would still be a problem. Good job with the sleep workaround. The "proper" way would be to set up a systemd .service then, probably for multi-user.target. But as long as it works I don't think it matters.

hello, so i've been testing this new solution, and it seems that the script must be run after i log in.
(if i wait with my password for longer than the sleep time i have selected, it doesn't work.)
i looked into using a systemd service as use suggested, i came up with this configuration:

ExecStart=/etc/wifiFix.sh

WantedBy=multi-user.target

but it still being run straight away and not waiting for me to log in..
any tips?

The simplest way to run something after login is not systemd but to go Menu > Session and Startup > Autostart > Add and then just add the link to your script in the command field,

Alternatively, I wonder what kills it during/after the login though. If you're not using Bluetooth try disabling the Bluetooth stuff from the startups, maybe you won't need the workaround at all then? The only other one that could be related is the NetworkManager applet, but with the NM service already running I doubt it#s that one.

well, turning off the bluetooth didn't help..
also using the Autostart option give the same results, it runs the script too soon.
currently the previous solution works, i just have to make sure i logged in before the script wakes up, otherwise i will run it manually.

Well, some user mode process must be responsible for this, once you identify that you can time execution exactly.

However, the autostart option fails because it executs in user context, but the modprobe commands needs elevated privileges. This is my fault, I forgot what we were running in that script. To get that to work you'd need to prefix the modprobes with sudo in the script and then create a sudoers exception for the script just like it's done for the Update Manager script in /etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate so you don't get prompted for a password.

PS: Also I was just thinking. One thing we didn't try was whether we shouldn't be loading the driver even earlier rather than later. So far everything seems to indicate it needs to be late but try this please and see if it makes a difference, this forces the driver to get loaded right away even if the device hasn't been detected yet:
