Network Manager installed?

Post by Newbie Bob »

I'm running LMM 19 with wireless access which appears to work OK. But it is not clear if Network Manager is also running possibly because (1) there may be no clearly identified icon on the panel - what does it look like ? (2) i'm still learning abt Mint.

Synaptic prgms show the following to be installed - (1) Network Manager (2) NM config connectivity-Ubuntu (3) NM Gnome (4) NM openvpn (5) NM PPTP (6) NM PPTP-Gnome.

Also under "applications" openconnect-Gnome" appears.

Under Synaptic 'sections' - (1) Networking [plain vanilla] (2) multiverse (3) universe (3) non-free

As a long time Win user this is REALLY CONFUSING !!!!! Why are there so many choices shown just to determine the status of a wireless connection ?? Isn't there a simpler solution avail ??

Have you tried clicking all of the icons in your system tray? One of them should be Network Manager, which is installed alright.

(5) NM PPTP

(6) NM PPTP-Gnome
network management framework (PPTP plug-in for Gnome GUI).
Also under "applications" openconnect-Gnome" appears.
Cisco AnyConnect plug-in.

Moving to a different OS has a learning curve. You did expect it to be different, right?

You seem to have confused all the network manager plug-ins for different network managers.

Hi Cat: all of the "plug-ins" were installed in hopes that at least one of them would provide EZ access to the Network Manager.

(1) Which one(s) can be safely deleted ?

(2) Were any important ones not installed ?

Thanx.

Did you try what I wrote in my earlier message?

I must confess that I quite fail to see what your problem is. It must be some fundamental misunderstanding. Calling up Network Manager and its settings, is by default as easy as can be. You're the first one I've ever seen complain about that in almost a decade of daily forum dwelling....

Hi Pjotr:

(1) both MATE NETSPEED and WICD are installed and apparently working well using Ethernet connection. However no access to WiFi. Only icon shown on panel is for NETSPEED.

(2) several posts abt a WiFi bug in LMM 19 may (repeat may) be the reason why i cannot access WiFi. As i said in my previous post i am a newbie to Linux so need help understanding whether the reported bug(s) are pertinent. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

(3) WiFi works for Windows so i believe the router is OK.

Now I see. Why on earth did you install those two applications? They're fully unnecessary and might disrupt Network Manager, which is the root of your problem.

It looks like your system has become an unhealthy stew. Do a clean re-installation and go with the defaults, before experimenting with other stuff.

Hello again Pjotr: both apps (Network Mgr & WICD) were installed only after Network Mgr stand-alone could not be accessed. If i remember correctly WiFi accessed worked ONLY after initial install of LMM-19 - subsequent updates MAY have caused the subsequent failure. If so, you are correct abt re-installing LMM-19 from CD. Would you review the posts abt possible bugs with WiFi while running LMM-19 to confirm my "SWAG" (scientific wild-ass guess) abt possible cause of this situation - i am not experienced enuff with Linux to decide. Obviously if there is still an un-resolved bug it makes no sense to re-install entire OS. Thanx.

Re: Network Manager installed?

Did you use the v2-iso for installing (like you should), and did you download it from one of the official mirrors? If not, select one of these three:

MATE:
http://mintmirror.math.washington.edu/l ... bit-v2.iso

Cinnamon:
http://mintmirror.math.washington.edu/l ... bit-v2.iso

Xfce:
http://mintmirror.math.washington.edu/l ... bit-v2.iso

Burn the iso of your choice onto a DVD or create a bootable USB stick with it, boot from it and then please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci

It's a matter of making sure that you start out with the right iso from the right (official) mirror. That should provide the optimal clean slate.

By subsequently posting the information that I requested, we on this forum can try to help you with the best solution. :)

Hello Pjotr:

(1) the link you sent provided the latest & greatest Mint version but even tho the Software Manager shows abt 10 different pgms with "network manager" in the name as being installed, it still does not appear to be working. When i try to add network Manager to the panel the only option is network MONITOR (which is installed and appears to be working well).

(2) the instructions provided for copy/paste the 5 cmds requested do not specify how to get the terminal contents into this forum. There are two "insert" icons avail on forum ('image' and 'url') which may work but very specific instructions how to include terminal screen contents will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanx.

You don't need to add Network Manager to the panel: it's already present in the system tray in your panel. Just click its icon there.

Copy/paste:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... /copypaste

(for getting terminal output into your forum message, of course apply the how-to in reverse)

The icon for Network Manager does NOT APPEAR ON MY PANEL even tho Software Manager shows that several Network Manager items/pgms/pkgs are already installed. Only Netspeed icon for ethernet connection is shown. What am i doing wrong ? Thanx.

Bob

ps: i will send the results of 5 cmds you requested later.

Hi again Pjote: Thanx for sending the very helpful images but the icon shown for NM is not visible on my panel or on any menu. Altho Software Manager displays 10 or 12 entries for various items/pgms/pkgs supposedly installed NM apparently cannot be run using any techniques that i know of. If you agree that there may be a bug in LMM 19 i will accept your explanation. Or if there is a launch technique that i am not aware of, plz advise. Thanx.

I GIVE UP !! No matter what i try Network Manager won't run. However WICD appears to work well. Thanx to all those who tried to help.

ps: WICD supports access to TWO wireless network connections and one ethernet network connection at same location using only one laptop PC running LMM 19.
