Wifi limited to ~30Mbps on Mint 19

Post by hgraca »

Hi,

I am using Mint 19 for a month and now I noticed Im limited to aprox 30Mbps with the wireless network.
My colleagues are using the same network and they get up to 160Mbps, both on mac and ubuntu.

Here are my laptop specs:

$ iwconfig
wlp3s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"WerkspotTech"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:F2:8B:D3:7F:E3
Bit Rate=144.4 Mb/s Tx-Power=1 dBm
I see you are connected to the 2.4GHz network which doesn't look to be able to support the throughput you say your colleagues are enjoying. Is there also a 5GHz access point offered?

I was checking and yes, there is a 5G link available, with the same name as the 2.4G.
But my system can not detect it:

Code: Select all

$ iwlist wlp3s0 scanning | grep -C3 WerkspotTech
                    Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1)
                    Quality=64/70  Signal level=-46 dBm
                    Encryption key:on
                    ESSID:"WerkspotTech"
                    Bit Rates:12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s
                              54 Mb/s
                    Mode:Master

Buh!!

After researching abit, it seems my wireless adapter (Intel Wireless-N 7260) doesn't support 5G

Thank you for your feedback anyway.

Let's see if we can get some more speed by unloading the module and load it with a parameter

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=8
See if that helps as it enables aggressive TX and some have reported a speed increase of over 60%

Hi hgraca,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

After trying "JeremyB" 's suggestion, if you want more speed, you can always get a small USB WiFi adapter that is plug-in-play with Linux and supports both 2.4ghz and 5 ghz networks ("dual band", n/ac) and the higher speed throughput. These are not expensive and are available on Amazon.com ("Panda", etc...), Ebay, maybe even locally at business supply stores, etc...

To "JeremyB", does that work with all WiFi adapters or just the OP's WiFi adapter?

Just Intel wifi that use the iwlwifi kernel module, old bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1319630
With any wifi device in Mint 18 or 19, this command might help as it prevents Network Manager from enabling wifi power save sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/*

Tkx for your replies guys.

I tried @JeremyB suggestion but it had no effect.

I decided to just replace my Intel® Wireless-N 7260 (only 2.4G wifi) for a more recent Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260, which will give me access to 5G wifi.

Its already discontinued but the form factor is the same (PciE Half Mini Card) and its the same base model so it should work fine in my laptop.

Again, thank you for your prompt replies.

Excuse the interruption, but this is a sore subject with me...

it seems that the MediaTek MT7630e adapter is not supported?

The MT7630e does not use iwlwifi module so it would not be loaded and since you don't have an Intel wifi the parameter will do nothing
