[Solved] HP Notebook WiFi issues

Post by jbh911 »

The notebook sees the available WiFi sources but doesn't provide the login box to allow log on, yet with a hot spot WiFi source it provides the log in box but I still can't access the internet. I running Linux Miint 18.1 Cinnamon.

Assistance in restoring WiFi would be greatly appreciated. Two laptop running Linux Mint 18.1 & 18.3 and both without WiFi, most frustration.

Re: [Solved] HP Notebook WiFi issues

I was running Linux Mint 18.3 64 bit and relying on WiFi from a mobile phone hot spot. Looks like I was a bit quick in determining I had no access to the internet. I used Firefox which didn't indicate it was looking for a server, hence my conclusion - no access to the internet.
However, I later accessed Update Manager checking on kernels - was on 4.10.0-45, and initiated an install of 4.13.0-39 - and to my surprise it commenced downloading but at an extremely slow speed, 20 to 80 kB/s!
On completion of that I noted I had 10 level 1 to 3 updates available which downloaded @ 556 kB/s.
Why didn't Firefox look for servers initially? Was it due to the very slow speed and iffy 3G phone signal available?

The message to me out of this is to make sure your WiFi is functional well before you set off from home if your going to have to rely on for weeks.

Post back if you continue to get low speed. Your wifi has probably been put into low power mode.
