Linux Mint 19 Tara Installation and no WiFi

Post by mu57i » Sun Oct 21, 2018 7:22 pm

So I have just installed Linux Mint 19 Tara Xfce on my laptop.

ideapad-305-15IBY

I am connected through ethernet but my WiFi is not working. When I click the icon in the right-hand corner it only shows the ethernet connection and there is no WiFi option.

How can I solve this issue?

Hello, mu57i.

Let us start by having a look at your hard- and software configuration, please.
Please, open a terminal window.
Execute the commandline

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
exactly as it has been typed here. Mark the complete text output which inxi will display and paste it into your next reply.
Hopefuly the inxi overview will give us a first hint on what the problem is.

Best regards,
Karl

Looks like you have a Broadcom wireless

Card-2: Broadcom Limited BCM43142 802.11b/g/n bus-ID: 04:00.0

In the Synaptic Package Manger search for bcmwl-kernel-source and install then reboot

Hope this helps

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
mokutil is already the newest version (0.3.0-0ubuntu5).
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.
SecureBoot enabled

Reboot and go into BIOS settings and disable Secure Boot so that module can work

I've done this and now wireless shows up in the right-hand corner and although I am putting in the correct WiFi password I am unable to connect. This keeps on popping up:

Just to let you know.

On my phone on the same network I can connect to WiFi that has 5 GHz, but I can't connect to the other broadcasting network that uses 2.4 GHz. So I can't connect to that on my laptop or my phone. So I think the problem can be different than how the OS or settings are configured. I use virginmedia and my WiFi is 'split' into two networks; one that has 5 GHz which doesn't show up on my laptop because of my laptop's network card being unable to connect to that type of network, but it does detect the 2.4 GHz WiFi but I'm not able to connect to it.

I am currently away from home and I've tested WiFi somewhere else and I've connected successfully. When I get back home i'll try it with my home WiFi to see if it works there too. I'll update you guys once I've done this.
