5Ghz Wifi speed problems

Post by mgruber » Tue Oct 30, 2018 3:25 pm

I'm using Mint 18.3 Xfce edition on an Aspire A515-51G laptop featuring an Intel Device 24fb Wifi chipset, which is driven by iwlwifi.

Until today it was only connected to my 2.4Ghz 802.11n+g+b Wifi network, which results in a speed of about 5MB/sec.
In order to speed things up a bit, I forced it to connect it to my 5Ghz 802.11n+ac network by changing the BSSID the 5Ghz one.

This worked out well (the connection stats showed 433Mbits instead of 72Mbit afterwards), but the actual datarate went down to about 600KB/sec, even when standing next to the WiFi router.

I checked everything inside the router (it's a Fritzbox): the WiFi signal strength is set 100% and according to the channel scan of the Fritzbox I'm the only 5Ghz user in my neighborhood with no radar nearby.

Any idea what might be wrong?
