I connects to the rest of my home network fine and I can share files. but, all I get with Firefox ins a We're having trouble finding.... for any site (Server not found). If I try to check for updates I get a "Failed to fetch......" error. It connects via WiFi and I've turned WiFi off and back on again.

I'm not seeing any DNS or default gateway settings. I would open Network Manager and check to see what's wrong. Here's the same command on my system:

Code: Select all

GENERAL.DEVICE: enp5s0
GENERAL.TYPE: ethernet

GENERAL.MTU: 1500

GENERAL.CON-PATH: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/6

I just realised that it may not be worth persevering with this, If my auction plans go as I hope tomorrow, I'll be re-building this machine in a week or so anyway. Of course, if not, then I'll have to get it working.

with no gateway, in this case one as DHCP server, is telling your wifi adapter who it is (and how to operate on network) so nothing is going anywhere but to 169.254.x.x which is non-routable.

Check your wifi adapter setting in NM for IPv4&6 tab, method: "automatic (DHCP)" or use DHCP for address only and manual DNS (try 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9 for cloudflare, google and quad9 public DNS servers, respectively) or go full static address and DNS.

It does appear that you have a static setting for address 192.168.1.2 which tells me you are on a private network (behind a router, etc) and as long as your DHCP server hasn't assigned that x.x.x.2 address to another then it should let you through...except you have no gateway (router/DHCP server) assigning DNS to help get you anywhere. once wifi adapter knows where the gateway is then the rest should get sorted..

Your options are to either go full DHCP assigned (address and DNS), DHCP assigned address and manual DNS, or static (manual both) and ensure DHCP server is ok with your choice. This need be done for both IPv4 tab and IPv6 tab in NM to get both IPv4&6 routing. If the wifi adapter will not do the automagic thing then I would look at something interfering with DHCP server packets- perhaps the static 192.168.2.1 address conflicts with another already having it so DHCP server (gateway) ignores it, otherwise I'd look for a firewall on computer or somewhere in lan/router/switch is blocking.

Hope this helps! (insert my "ima linux newbie" warning here:)

I'm currently using other computers on the same network, in fact the one I am typing this on is a "new" one on the network, so I doubt that the issue is router based. I was hoping to upgrade my server and then trickle down the components from that to this machine. Did not happen, so I shall have to fix it. When I get five minutes, I shall upgrade it to Mint 19 as it is the only machine on the network that is not running Mint 19. FWIW Firewall in the machine is turned off. I'd have considered that assigning the same address to two machines would affect access to the entire network by both of those machines. I can address the local network with no issues.

I shall spend a bit more on this machine sometime in the next week. For now I must get two "new" laptops working in Mint. 'Nutha thread coming up, ;D

Turned out there may have been an address conflict as I reset the address to automatic and disabled IPv6 (again) and it all started. Disconnected and then re-connected to wifi and all works as intended. Since then I've upgraded that machine to LM19 so all of my machines are on the same page. :P
