Internal WIFI not found after restart

Post by two06 »

Hi all,

The internal WIFI card on my XPS 15 (2018) has stopped working. It was fine when I shutdown last week, and not working when I powered on this morning. I'm posting this using an alfa card, which works fine.

I'm running Mint 19 Cinnamon, kernel 4.15.0-36.

I've posted some info below, which all show the alfa card only. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I found on one of my machines that the wifi network card had been disabled in driver manager. Could be worth a look,

Thanks for the reply.

when I open Driver Manager, I get a screen showing two options for my nvidia card, and nothing else. Is there a way to view other drivers?

cheers,

Check BIOS settings to see if wlan is enabled. You could also remove the wifi card and reinstall it to see if it was a connection issue

Thanks for the suggestions all.

After shutting down last night, and restarting this morning, I now have the WIFI adapter back. I have no idea why, nothing has changed since yesterday, and I tried a few reboots yesterday morning.

Please keep this thread alive and help find the answer to what is happening! I am going through the same issue--my Wifi just disappeared, and it refuses to turn back on when I click on the applet in the bottom right of the screen. Help, please!

I have taken to just turning off the monitor, and do not power off my PC or my laptop anymore.

it just is not worth the hassle of things not working again.

on my Win7 desktop, the bootup process is so painstakingly slow, I could plow the garden, plant the seeds, and water them.... and the blooms are coming out of the ground before the damn thing settles down and wants to work for me.

and that is on a fast mobo, approx 2 gHz clock and 6 gB RAM, and a video card that has its' own RAM. nothing shared. it is pathetic.... never mind Win10, won't use it.

With my 18.3 Cinnamon laptop, sometimes it will shutdown smooth, other times it won't.
there just does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to how it works...

LMDE3 Cindy on the other hand, boots fast, and shuts down in 5 seconds. nice and clean.
same laptop, just a dedicated partition.

looks like you updated to kernel 4.15.0-38-generic x86_64 bits but you say you have 4.15.0-36
try booting with 4.15.0-36 and see how things are

Found the solution to my problem:
There is a function key that I accidentally pressed that turned off the wifi, and the software could not override it to turn it back on. Believe it or not, Windows help trouble shooted this and suggested to look for a switch on the front or the side of the laptop to turn wifi off. So, look for a switch or function key that you might have flipped!

My Dell laptops both have that infernal hardware switch,
and I can't begin to count the times that trying to press '2' goes awry and my fingers hits the hardware WiFi switch....

I finally pasted a label on the button with WiFi in large bold letters.
then stuck a label writer strip on the bottom of the screen:
No WiFi ? turn on the WiFi switch dummy
