WiFi stopped working - tried everything and all fails

Post by interzone77 »

Hi all!

- I am using Linux Mint 18.3 cinnamon. Wi-fi stopped working (it doesn't find any networks) a month ago and never went on again.

sudo inxi -Fxz

- There's no combo of keys or button to turn Wi-Fi On/Off in my laptop. It is on on BIOS.

- I tried all I could find on the forum and all over the web and nothing works.

Thank you!

I found this link from an old Linux Mint Community post (https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1796). Since it was 4 years old, I searched to see if there was anything updated since then, and found this: https://neurobin.org/projects/softwares/unix/MT7630E/.

The latest driver is still a couple of years old, but your WiFi adapter is old as well. Do you happen to remember if the adapter failed after a kernel upgrade? If so, you need to make sure that the DKMS module is installed so it will automatically rebuild.

Thank you AJGringo! It was exactly that.

It's working now...

Great to hear. I would suggest making a Timeshift snapshot of your system now, just in case the next kernel update doesn't go as planned.
